Both Roma and Juve won their last matches, respectively against Parma (3-1)
and Atalanta (2-1). This means that Roma won the 2000/2001 season Scudetto.
Juve assured the second place and a spot on the Champions League, without
having to go through the preliminary rounds.
Juventus
had a nice last match, taking the lead right on the 6th minute with Trezeguet.
Alex had some opportunities to close his season with a goal, but he did
help Juve scoring the second: Tacchinardi's amazing long distance goal
came from a Del Piero corner kick.
Juve
will have a "new" coach next season: it is Marcello Lippi, who makes his
return to the club, after quitting the job in February, 1999. Carlo Ancelotti
was sacked by Juve, which justified the action by saying Carlo wasn't exactly
popular among journalists and supporters.
The
players showed their affection to Carlo by a "group hug" after Tacchinardi's
goal vs Atalanta. Alessio and Alex approached the coach first, and then
the other players came. They also gave Ancelotti a present: a watch with
a small poem that went like "Carletto e scudetto" ("Carletto and Scudetto").
The original idea came from Tacchinardi, Ferrara, Inzaghi and Del Piero.
The
team will now go on vacation and their 2001/02 season will start with the
traditional friendly against Valle D'Aosta, on July 22. Del Piero said
on his official website - http://www.alessandrodelpiero.com/
- that he'll keep the fans informed on his vacations.
