Del Piero has declared he is ready to play in midfield for Juve, in the
absence of the suspended Edgar Davids. The Italy international striker,
who reaffirmed a few days ago his wish to play upfront at the Delle Alpi,
has put his name forward as a possible candidate for the midfield role
left open by Davids' suspension. Juve are further hampered in that position
thanks to Zinedine Zidane's move to Real Madrid, and Del Piero told Italian
sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport that he would happily help out his
team in this position if need be. Del Piero seems to be one of the few
candidates for the midfield role as new signing Pavel Nedved is more at
home on the wing, and talks to bring Fabio Liverani to Juve look to be
going nowhere. Juve coach Marcello Lippi has confirmed in the past that
Del Piero may be used as a makeshift midfielder behind the two strikers,
who are likely to be David Trezeguet and Darko Kovacevic.
