Juventus
honorary president Gianni Agnelli has made a scathing attack on the club's
popular champion and striker Alessandro Del Piero.
Agnelli
is known for being a man who speaks his mind freely and has no fear of
saying what he really thinks. In the past he has delivered cutting remarks
to all of those stars who, according to him, were not doing their best
for Juve.
From
Zbigniew Boniek to Roberto Baggio, from Michel Platini to Zinedine Zidane,
nobody has been spared from Agnelli's caustic comments. This time, the
Italian car tycoon has had his say on Juve's most popular star Del Piero,
who he believes is not playing at his best. Agnelli has had already been
less than tender with Del Piero in the past, when after his comeback from
a serious injury, he had labeled him as "Godot" referring to Samuel Beckett's
play in which every character is waiting for this mysterious Godot to arrive:
"I don't really care what role Del Piero plays in," said Agnelli before
the traditional game between Juve A and Juve B in Villar Perosa. "Whatever
role he plays in, whether it's as a striker or as a midfielder the important
thing is that he wakes up a bit."
After
the game Del Piero refused to comment on Agnelli's statements but through
Juve's press officials he reassured everybody that his team will be alive
and kicking for the beginning of the championship: "I can guarantee that
Juve will be ready to play at our best in ten days at the most."
