Tonight the curtain goes
up on the final of the Cup Winners Cup which pits Lazio against Mallorca.
It will be the 39th and last Cup Winners Cup as next season's competition
has been phased out. Tuttosport, which heads its front page with "Lazio,
give us the last Cup", sees Eriksson's team as the favourites. Next to
the headline, Claudio Colombo describes the match by saying that Lazio
will be playing against good opposition and against a referee, the Austrian
Benko, who has been guilty of some serious anti-Italian misdeeds".
Moving on to Juventus, the
paper confirms that Ancelotti is looking at his team for next season and
reveals his transfer targets. Stefano Agresti says the Juventus coach has
no intention of sticking with a single system, so he will have Zidane as
well as Henry and Zambrotta. There are alternatives who can act as cover
while Del Piero makes a full recovery. The club is thinking about Kovacevic,
Muzzi or Lopez - someone who could be a worthy replacement.
The paper also mentions Tudor
and Ferrara, saying that Ancelotti wants both of them for next season.
Tuttosport says Professor Gaudino, who is Juventus' PE trainer as well
as Ventrone's right hand man, will leave Juventus after 17 years to join
Marcello Lippi at Inter. Another thing that stands out is the paper's report
that Alex Del Piero said he wanted to stay in Turin: "Juventus has no equals
in terms of its image, so it is not just a question of money". The paper
thinks that the decisive meeting to discuss Del Piero's future will be
on Friday.
Tuttosport moves on to a
thorny issue. "Vidulich is starting a negotiations spiral for the first
time". Fabio Ravezzani says the most direct route is to talk with Beppe
Aghemo. For now he says there are no specific proposals but that the president
is waiting for them to make his assessment. Meanwhile the squad is off
to Pieve di Saligno in Treviso where a mini-retreat has been organised
to prepare for Sunday's difficult match.
Gazzetta dello Sport: The
rumours on the transfer market are that Simeone will stay with Inter even
with Jugovic still there: "The Argentine has had assurances from Inter".
Finally, in Formula 1: "At Barcelona, Schuhmacher wants more speed out
of Ferrari".
La Stampa leads with Lazio's
match tonight in Birmingham. Lazio are looking for their first European
trophy. Marco Ansaldo says it will not be easy: "To beat Mallorca we mustn't
be thinking about Milan. Mallorca is a bright and naïve team off the
pitch but hard and level-headed on the pitch". Next to that there is a
curious piece of news: the English champions, in Gascoigne style, have
not lost the bad habit of lashing out with their hands (sometimes kicking
out too). In Manchester "Keane ends up in a cell for kicking a woman".
La Stampa also writes about Carlo Ancelotti's new Juventus: "the coach
hopes that Del Piero quickly signs his contract and that Ferrara stays
with Juventus. Nor does he make any secret of the confidence he has in
Tudor".
