Cycling and Formula 1 fill
today's front pages, "Schumacher against the world" is Corriere dello Sport's
headline. It then moves onto the Vieri reasoning: "There is simply no case
for the centre forward: Lazio are on tenterhooks". The paper comments on
President Cragnotti's anger at being pressurised by Juventus and Inter.
He now intends not to release
the centre forward for a year: "Let me make this quite clear. I will not
release him, even if that means him being in the stand for a whole year".
Corriere claim that Juventus have offered Del Piero and that Inter are
also interested in Negro. In connection with the 'Bianconero' transfer
market, there is more talk of Edgar Davids who is signed until 2004, a
fact much regretted by Milan's President Silvio Berlusconi".
The Gazzetta dello Sport
opens with cycling and with Formula 1. Football is the main concern though
as Bologna take on Inter in the UEFA challenge: "Come on, Inter, follow
Man Utd example" is Hodgson's plea to the Black and Blues.
Transfer rumours abound in
The Gazzetta, mentioning that Juventus in particular, has reinforced their
midfield with Bachini and efforts to secure Anelka are still ongoing.
"Juve in dire straits" is
the headline inside. Carlo Ancelotti has precious few players to call on
for Monday's UEFA challenge against Udinese, with Conte and Ferrara both
suspended. Juventus are also depleted through a variety of injuries, with
Deschamps the latest casualty. "This year Juventus have got used to emergencies",
writes the Gazzetta dello Sport, "but never quite to this extent. Ancelotti
has still got 14 players including two goalkeepers. And one top player
- Inzaghi". Three players from the youth team have also been called up.
This is followed by very
unsporting news: "The notorious extremist fan group, Ultras, invade town
hall: press room destroyed". An Ultra delegation was able to speak to Ancellotti
before the training session but then "ten or so Ultras broke away from
the group and overpowered the security staff. They rampaged through the
press room, shattering two large windows and shouting slogans against Juventus
and the journalists."
Tuttosport also opens with
Formula 1 and cycling but devotes a large space for Torino: "It is time
to finish talks about their move to Brescia", followed by "Juve: Davids
2004". On the Transfer market: "Djetou arrives on Tuesday, and an press
conference and medical for the player have already been arranged.
According to Tuttosport:
"Iuliano will go, Ferrara will stay and there is also interest in the Argentinian
player Crosa. Negotiations are underway for an exchange between Fonseca
and Simeone but Kovacevic and Rapaic are waiting in the wings". On the
"Ultras'' assault on the town hall, Tuttosport writes: "Pitch invaded for
half an hour, press room destroyed, television camera stolen. Juventus
denounces the incident". "There were fifty of them and they destroyed everything.
Fifty 'ultras' from Juventus at odds with the world because of the warnings
issued on Wednesday to four of their group not to come to the stadiums."
