The Vieri storm has not yet
blown over. It has taken until now for all the hidden truths and ripostes
to bubble to the surface. The Inzaghi saga is over with the contract signed
yesterday. The national team forward has extended his contract with Juventus
until 2004.
Tuttosport has the headline:
"Inzaghi says yes to Juve." Inzaghi says: "I've signed a new contract because
they've assured me that the team will be a strong one." His financial terms
have already been agreed. "Pippo (Inzaghi) will earn 6bn lira per annum
(around £2m). And there will be a meeting with Del Piero within days."
Tuttosport continues with:
"Juventus has pulled off the second coup of its intense, exciting week
of deals. Following its announcement that it is about to buy Real Sociedad
forward Darko Kovacevic, Juventus agreed financial terms with Filippo Inzaghi
yesterday. The centre forward has decided to stay for another five years."
The paper also says that Juventus will be using Inzaghi as a personality
linked to the club [eg for publicity].
Other Juventus deals: "Now
Vannucchi (Salernitana) is being targeted as a second striker. Di Livio
to leave, Bacchini (Udinese) to join. Monaco are now releasing Djetou,
Juventus' interest in Nedved has cooled."
Corriere dello Sport has
detailed coverage of Inzaghi's new contract. "Inzaghi signs and doubles
(his earnings). Contract extended until 2004. His wages rise from 3.2bn
(around £1m) lira to 6bn lira (around £2m)." Further down:
"Juve interested in Vanoli (Parma) and Giannichedda (Udinese). Defence
and midfield need to be rejigged with Iuliano or Tudor leaving as well
as Deschamps (to Monaco or Chelsea). Ancelotti thinks highly of Parma defender
Vanoli. Moggi offers 20bn lira (around £7m) for the Udinese man (Giannichedda)."
Gazzetta dello Sport starts
with the headline about Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti's bitter outburst:
"Vieri a blackmailer. Cragnotti's irate riposte to the player. Christian
(Vieri) thanks Lippi, Inter and Agnelli." "In response to Vieri's accusation
that he sold him to put 30-40bn lira (around £10m-£14m) in
his pocket, Cragnotti explains in 10 points how he was forced to yield
to blackmail and says he was amenable to adjusting what was already a very
high wage." Vieri, who signed a contract with Inter after the Italy-Switzerland
game, has left for Australia (he will be at the opening ceremony of the
Olympic stadium in Sydney)." Other transfer market news: "Milan blocks
O'Neill, the Cagliari midfielder will not join Milan before 2000."
Fiorentina: "Wait for a yes
from Chiesa, are getting closer to signing Di Livio and have got the talented
Kezman from Partisan Belgrade." Roma: "It's now official, Del Vecchio is
staying." Inter: "Ventola shock, 50bn lira (around £17m). Arsenal
and Chelsea knocking on the door, but the striker wants to stay in Italy."
