The sports papers are again
brimming with close-season transfer news. The big news is Nestor Sensini's
move from Parma to Lazio. "Sensini joins Lazio. The Argentine defender
has moved to the court of Sergio Cragnotti for 10bn lira (around £3.4m)"
runs Gazzetta dello Sport's front page headline. Its other front-page headlines
are: "Juve go foreign - Oliseh makes it 13 (overseas players in the squad)".
After so many seasons when Juventus largely comprised home-grown talent,
Italians are now in the minority. Out of these 13 overseas players, as
many as eight will be in coach Carlo Ancelotti's starting line-up. The
Nigerian international Sunday Oliseh will sign for Juventus on July 2 after
rejecting Roma who had signed a contract with Ajax.
Inside Gazzetta there is
an interview with Inter's Alvaro Recoba who says: "Before I was just a
little boy, now I've grown up and people respect me. Before I used to play
to entertain but there weren't many chances to do that. At Venezia I learnt
to be more focused. Ronaldo and Vieri are a fearsome duo. With them in
harness and some good defenders we're bound to put together a good run
of results."
Meanwhile, Corriere dello
Sport says Ciro Ferrara's departure from Juventus is imminent: "Ferrara
knows he won't start as a first-choice player and wants to leave. Today
he's meeting Luciano Moggi who will try to persuade him to stay. Inter
are ready to step in and buy him. And Juventus, on the lookout for replacements,
are turning their attention to Monaco's Martin Djetou." The paper's other
market news is: "Lazio capture Sensini. Trappatoni gets Mijatovic. Chiesa
is also heading for Fiorentina." Mijatovic's terms have been agreed - 15bn
lira (around £5.2m) to Real Madrid and 3bn lira (around £1m)
to the player in a three-year deal - and he may sign tomorrow. Talks with
Chiesa are imminent.
Inside Corriere is a piece
of news which will please Juventus fans no end. Juventus are kings of Europe
over the last five years, according to UEFA's latest news bulletin. UEFA's
calculations of 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for
a defeat in European games, with a bonus point for every time a team qualifies
for the Champions League and reaches the quarters, semis and final are
totted up and then added to the average points of the national coefficient.
Juventus has collected a total of 121,606 points. In this particular table,
which is used to determine the seedings in the European cup competitions,
Juventus are well ahead of Ajax (91,908 points), Bayern Munich (91,908
points) Parma (87,606 points) and Lazio (87,606 points).
Tuttosport's headline runs
"Juve now twice as strong: after the Del Piero contract, Ancelotti has
two teams at his disposal. With the Oliseh and Djetou signings about to
be announced the midfield and defence are in place." Tuttosport says that
Diego Simeone is heading for Lazio along with Sensini, that Bologna and
Gianluca Pagliuca have agreed terms, that Udinese's Alessandro Calori is
going to Perugia (whose Hidetoshi Nakata remains the centre of much speculation)
and that Parma are closing in on Sampdoria's Ariel Ortega.
