The front pages of the papers
are all about Formula 1. Yesterday's French Grand Prix in Magny-Cours provoked
great emotions. Emotions are running high in the transfer market, too.
All the clubs in Serie A are still after that sensational coup. So to what
the main sports dailies are writing.
Let's start with Tuttosport.
The Turin daily has the front page headline "Juve close the deal for Djetou,
Torino make for Diawara. A double mission to Monte Carlo for Monaco's two
strong defenders". Inside we find important news about Zinedine Zidane.
The French ace has decided to stay in Turin, despite pressure from Real
Madrid, in order to seek further success in the black-and-white shirt.
Zidane said: "It's true, I've received lots of offers but for the moment
I'm staying at Juventus. To play in Spain remains my long-term objective.
But in the spring I spoke too hastily. In a word, I should have kept my
mouth shut".
This is an important week
at Juve: "First Del Piero's signature and finally the news of Oliseh. And
in the middle Djetou. Rapajc too still has to be sorted, while Campbell
remains the last minute dream".
The Corriere dello Sport,
next to motor racing which we'll talk about later, concentrates on transfer
news: "Crucial days for three great characters. Zidane, Anelka, Giannini
on the track." More confusion surrounds the French attacker Anelka, who
should still end up in Cragnotti's court: "Anelka is about to go to Lazio.
He had dinner in Paris with Wenger, Arsenal's coach, ending in a split.
Cragnotti is ready to leave for London". Other news: "Roma launch a bid
for Marcos Assuncao. Cagliari tie up Muzzi and O'Neill. Perugia want Ravanelli.
Crucial hours for Candela's move to Inter: either he arrives or it's all
off. Pancaro is still an alternative, but Ferrara are putting up the price".
Let's move on to the Gazzetta
dello Sport. In the spotlight is Carlo Ancelotti. The paper says: "Starting
with the Intertoto (UEFA Cup qualification is absolutely vital), the coach
believes he has a stronger defence and he has great expectations for his
new attacking formation." "My young Juve? More eager to win," says the
Juve trainer. "We really want to redeem ourselves. Players have come who
are not the most established, but they have a great desire to break through
and this will be our strength. I'm expecting a fighting Juve which will
know how to take advantage of its own resources of talent and imagination.
Zidane is extremely strong, maybe a defender could come. Milan are stronger
and Inter with Lippi will definitely be up there again."
Let's end with the Formula
1 page: "Frentzen beats a great Hakkinen (overtook 14 times). Schumi betrayed.
After a downpour and the safety-car he leaps at the controls and he's off.
But he goes into the pits and Irvine lets him come 5th." Similar headline
too in the Corriere dello Sport: "Ferrari get everything wrong. After the
blunder in the qualifying sessions, another series of errors and breakdowns
ruin the Ferraris' race. Incredibly Irvine returns to the pits where he
doesn't find the mechanics waiting for him. Hakkinen increases his lead
over Schumacher to 8 points."
