A disappointing start to
the new league campaign for Juventus, with the Old Lady held at home by
newly-promoted Reggina (1-1, Inzaghi and Kallon). Of the six big teams
that played yesterday (Lazio meet Cagliari this evening), only Inter and
Fiorentina managed to secure maximum points by beating Verona and Bari
respectively. For Juve, however, there was an unexpected blow.
"Juve give Reggina a welcome
gift," runs Gazzetta dello Sport's headline. Ancelotti did not overreact:
"This result has surprised everybody a bit but there is no point in being
melodramatic. We were punished for one lapse of concentration. The whistles?
Understandable." But Filippo Inzaghi said: "We cannot concede goals like
that."
Tuttosport, like almost every
other sports daily, devotes its front page to Vieri, who marked his Inter
debut with a hat-trick. The paper taunts Juve with the question: "Juve,
have you seen Vieri?". Inside, 'l'Avvocato', Gianni Agnelli, says: "Do
not let me talk about Vieri, it will only make me angry." It goes on: "Kallon
show, Zizou shock. Zidane started off well but then switched off. Del Piero
did not make a mark. Mirkovic to be blamed for the draw. Only Inzaghi impressed."
But Gianluca Zambrotta remains optimistic, promising: "We will win at Cagliari."
In Corriere dello Sport,
we read: "Inzaghi raises Ancelloti's hopes, Kallon dashes them." The Roman
daily gives due attention to the Davids question: "Dropped because of eye
drops. To cure his eye, he needs a specific drug that is banned by the
CIO. Could the issue be resolved today?"
La Stampa has the headline
"Del Piero plays a solo, Juve do not sing. There is no Alex or Zidane magic,
but all of the team lacked the spirit shown in the Intertoto. The draw
was not a gift but a reward for battling performance from the Colomba's
Calabrians." In its report the focus is on two Juve players: Oliseh and
Inzaghi.
Tomorrow Italy coach Dino
Zoff will name his squad for the next round of European Championship qualifiers.
Dead certs are Inzaghi, Del Piero, Conte and Zambrotta. It uncertain whether
Pessotto, Iuliano and Bachini will be called up.
