Chapter 1 She slid behind the steering wheel as the sun came up over the oranges and reds, that were October in the east. She let out an exaggerated breath as she looked over her shoulder. The truck started easily and she dared not let it warm up before pulling away from the expansive home and grounds that were quickly fading her her review mirror. She knew that she shouldn't leave like this. She knew that she would, most likely, regret it later. Right now it was the only thing she could do, the only thing that felt right in her heart. As she maneuvered easily onto the near deserted freeway the tears began to course down her cheeks. Cursing silently to herself she briskly wiped them away, turning up the radio to tune out her own thoughts. The song that instantly came on though, made that near impossible. "Gone." She sighed through clenched teeth. What am I thinking? She wondered to herself. Glancing at her dashboard clock a few minutes later, her breath caught in her throat. He would be up now, would he notice her absence right away? Would he realize all her things were gone? Frustrated with herself she pulled off of the freeway at the next exit. She got a cup of coffee and some powdered donuts for the road. Eyeing the payphone wearily she pulled some change out of her pocket. She decided not to use her cell phone so that the number wouldn't come up on his caller ID. Brushing a stray lock of chestnut hair out of her eyes, she dialed the familiar number, taking a deep breath. He answered on the second ring sounding groggy and confused. She hung up quickly and ran back to her truck. Climbing into the cab, she rested her head on the steering wheel. A sudden knock on her window shocked her back to the present. "Kenz, what are you doing out here?" The man, slightly older than her, looked concerned. "Just going for a drive, stopped for some coffee." She smiled half heartedly holding up her coffee cup as if to prove it to him "You do realize that you're almost an hour from home don't you?" "Oh, no I hadn't realized that. I just started driving." She laughed nervously. "Well I'd better get going. See you later." She waved before putting the truck in gear and quickly leaving the parking lot. JC noticed that she had turned the wrong way onto the freeway, he noticed her tear stained cheeks, he also noticed a few suitcases in the bed of the black truck. He called Lance quickly and he answered in a panic. "Kenz, is that you?" "No, it's Jayce. I just saw Kenz, she was packed up and heading west on the freeway." "What, and you just let her go?" "She told me she was out for a drive, and that she was headed home." JC was nervous, he had never heard his usually calm friend so worked up. "Look, I'll follow her if you'd like, see where she's headed?" "No, don't do that, she'll come back, she has to." Lance finished desperately, near tears. "Thanks for calling man, later." He hung up before JC could reply and fell onto the king size bed. Why had she left? Things seemed to be going so well, perfect almost. What had he done, he didn't know, but he was sure he would find out soon enough. Chapter Two Main Story Page |
