Chapter Six

Later that night McKenzie sat alone in her room contemplating what she should do next. She knew that CHris was right about telling Lance, and that if she told him now, she wouldn't have to go through the surgery alone. She also knew that he was going to be very upset with her. As much as she knew he loved her, she knew that she had broken his trust and it would be hard to find her way back to his heart.

The phone on her table rang, breaking her from her train of thought. It was a nurse from the surgery center calling to confirm her arrival at six the next morning. She hung up the phone sobbing and stepped out onto the balcony for some fresh air. She was startled to hear the deep clear sound of Lance's voice near her. She turned to see his back facing her on the balcony next door. She backed quickly into her room, stopping just inside the door so she could listen to his voice. She leaned her head against the door frame and closed her eyes, soaking in every nuance of his voice to her memory.

"Mom, I can't just forget 2 years of my life. I need her, I have to find her."

"Honey, I know that, I just wanted you to hear yourself say it. Go find her, show her what she means to you." Lance sighed deeply and smiled at his mother's words.

"I will mom, I gotta go. Thank you, I love you."

"I love you too, I hope you can get some sleep."

"Me too, bye."

"Bye"

Lance turned leaning against the balcony to look at the city and ocean below. He took a deep breath and turned suddenly. He could smell a familiar perfume lingering in the air, but there was no one around. The lights were on and the doors open in the room next door. The only movement though, came from the sheer white curtains billowing in the ocean breeze.  Lance sighed and walked back into his room.

Hours later they both lay still awake in their seperate rooms. McKenzie trying to work up the courage to take the few steps to Lance's door. Lance struggling with the emotions swirling inside him. He felt so betrayed by the way Kenz had left and yet he was so much in love with her that he wanted to forget what she'd done and just remember the way it felt to be near her.

McKenzie turned to her bedside clock and groaned, knowing that it was time to get up. She showered and slipped into comfortable clothes before grabbing a small bag with her personal items. She stepped out the door at 5:30 and ran right into Justin.

"Sorry." He mumbled, almost incoherently, as he steadied her with his hands. She pushed past him and the doors were closing on the elevator before he realized who she was. "Kenz wait!" He called, too late, the doors closed tightly before he could reach her. He rant to Lance's door and pounded loudly with both fists. The door flew open and a tired and startled Lance stood looking expectantly at his friend.

"This better be good J."

"Lance, Kenz just got on that elevator." Justin stated pointing.

"What? Are you sure?"

"Yes I'm sure." Justin pulled Lance into the hall and pushed him towards the elevator. Chris ran out into the hall and dashed toward Lance.

"Lance...sorry...I fell asleep...Kenz...here..." Chris pointed to the hotel room door and bent over gasping for air.

"So she is here?" Lance shouted.

"No, she was here." Justin corrected. Lance paid no attention as he ran back to his room for his jacket and wallet and dashed to the elevator. By the time he stepped in he was near tears with excitement, and hope. Justin and Chris joined him leaving a note for JC. They ran to the parking lot just in time to see Kenz's truck pulling away from the hotel. Lance had reached his breaking point. He sank onto the pavement, sobbing openly, as his friends tried to console him.
