Archery is a sport that can be enjoyed by all ages and by both men and women. It requires both mental and physical skills and participants of this sport develop techniques to control their movements, their endurance and their mental steadiness.
The Olympic archery competition have four categories of events: Men's individual events, Women's individual events, Men's team events and Women's team events. Competitors stand 70 meters away from their target. A target is 122 centimeters in diameter and has 10 colored rings, the central ring being 12 centimeters in diameter. The competitor gets points depending on where they hit the target; an arrow in the outermost ring gets one point where an arrow in the center ring gets ten points.
Archery emerged as a sport even in ancient times, the bow and arrow was one of human kinds first composite mechanical invention. To the people of ancient times, Archery was an art. Latter in history, Archery became a sport of leisure. One of the first Archery contests ever recorded was in 1583 in Finsbury. Three thousand archers took part.
In 1900 Archery was accepted into the Olympic Games but then was taken out again in 1920. It was them restored to the Games at Munich in 1972 and the Team archery event was introduced in 1988 at Seoul.
