Pinturas Rupestres, Baja California
At first glance, Baja California seems to have nothing to do with ancient American civilization. No Maya, no Aztec, no Toltec. No pyramids at all unless you count this one built to titilate the tourist cameras and lull them to sleep above the sounding sea. To bad it's hundreds of miles away from the Cave Paintings! (But on the way from LA, just after Tijuana.)
What there is in Baja, in spades, hearts, clubs and diamonds, is EnvironmenT. Some of the most spectacular scenery and beaches that this world has ever seen. Two coastlines, desert, mountains, and lagoons where whales give birth.
BUT Yes, there is Archeology, too, with sites to interest the adventurous traveler. Ancient cave paintings and old missions speak from the past to anyone who would listen.
Precisely here, in this peninsula at one end of Mexico, you can study art from the beginnings of civilization. Paintings -- pinturas rupestres -- left behind by hunter-gatherers who created them up in their rocky shrines. Sacred animals and nature powers.
There are several cave-painting sites in the central part of the peninsula. Permission to visit must be obtained from the INAH office in the oasis of San Ignacio (a charming small town which boasts a well-preserved mission surrounded by green trees).
para buscar información Yahoo o Google o loquesea en español hay que meter PINTURAS RUPESTRES BAJA CALIFORNIA and to look for information in english you need to put in CAVE PAINTINGS BAJA CALIFORNIA pero no se necesita las mayusculas eh but capital letters are NOT necessary
