Tijuana Gringo : Diary Sunday Domingo 28 December 2003 Tijuana, Baja California On the weekends in the park they play music and clowns entertain the children and adults for tips. Today the music started at... get this... SEVEN AM boom wham blast blast recorded music echoing over the neighborhood of sleeping hospitals and hangover morningafter neighbors who partied late last night. Not me, fortunately, I went to bed at ten what a droop but hey I was tired and it was colder than a witches tit in January brrrrr my feminist friends are beating on me now for saying that and you think it never gets cold in California well hell is frozen over so think again and if you think it never gets cold in Mexico well think again again and again |

This is Mexico and this is California that is the real beauty of Tijuana it is Mexico and it is California all of California that the yankees left to Mexico once they had grabbed the rest of the northern part. Notice I do not say "we" although it Was my ancestors who paid the taxes for the army that invaded Mexico and well that was then and this is now and Now It Is VERY Cold At Night Of course tengo que confesar que when I say cold I mean barely almost freezing, nothing worse than that... and after three winters in Washington D.C. and then two more winters in Chicago Illinois well, yes, what we had last night was cold but not Cold and not COLD only cold cool chill cold yes it was cold but not Cold nor COLD. There's a big reading of writers tonight at the Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown San Diego. Seems to be a lot of UCSD types well at least two of them are professors there and you should know that institutionally speaking the Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown San Diego is DefiniteLY ASSociated with the institution of the same name in La Jolla yes. Yes. Not that it matters but institutional bureaucracy Is The Question and The Answer, here. Go There, you can see for yourself how the world of contemporary literature is organized into a living, breathing, institutional creature. Heh heh that's a lot of garbage I wrote instead of saying "There you will find the press release with information about the reading tonight." It's just that I know that behind the suave and "delicate" exterior of "contemporary writing" and "public readings" I know that there beats a heart of bureaucratic behavior and social cooperation. The image we have of an artist as a loner, or of a writer as some fool shut up in an attic scribbling, is merely that, an image. Writers must work alone, it IS true, but... but then comes the social function. The public reading. I might go. But it is such a hassle crossing the border and getting up into town and... But it is a moment. A special moment. And I DID study with some of those readers. Those writers. So beyond the purely aesthetic reason of hearing some good artists read, there is also the chance to see some old acquaintances from the university. From the universe. From the cosmos of my dream | |||||
