A cinquenta kilómetros al noreste de la ciudad de México... levántarse aún
las pirámides... Son los monumentos principales de las ruinas las dos pirámides, el Tonatiuhzacualli, que estaba dedicada al sol, y el
Meztlizacualli, á la luna.
La ciudad misma muestra zonas bastante distintas... la antecesora directa de nuestras plazas con la combinación iglesia-palace and plaza-mercado.
Los hay, además, que pueden considerarse pequeños ciudades con su centro ceremonial establecido y edificios ordenados alrededor de plazas y zonas residenciales. There are, furthermore, those which can be considered little cities with their ceremonial center and buildings organized around plazas and residential zones. De lo que estamos seguros es de que la ciudad fue incendiada, saqueada y en parte destruida de propósito; las huellas del incendio final son evidentes en muchos de los templos a lo largo de la calle de los Muertos. Donde más se advierte esto es en el palacio del Quetzalpapálotl. Aquí no se conformaron con quemar los techos, sino que las maravillosasa columnas esculpidas con la efifie del dios fueron desmanteladas y en parte soterrados en un enorme scavón abierto en el centro del patio. También la escalera monumental de la pirámide de la Luna fue destruida de proósito y casi todas las grandes piedras de los escalones -hoy repuestas en su sitio primitivo- fueron quitadas de allí y esparcidas por la plaza. Tenemos también evidencia de que muchas de las ofrendas que solían colocarse frente a los templos al edificarse fueron saquedas de tal manera que en casi todos los casos sólo encontramos vacías las cajas. Tel vez en tal ocasión acarreraon también durante varios metros la enorme estatua de la diosa del Agua -hoy en el museo-, que se supone estaba sobre la pirámide de la Luna y fue hallada hacia 1860 -ya sin su corazón de jade- a 142 metros al oesta de la pirámide.

What we are sure of is that the city was burned, sacked and in part destroyed on purpose; the marks of the last fires are evident in many of the temples alongside the Street of the Dead. Where one notices this most is in the palace of the Quetzalpapalotl. Here they were not limited to burning the rooves, but also the marvelous columns sculpted with the image of the god were dismantled and in part buried in an enormous open pit in the center of the patio. The monumental staircase of the pyramid of the Moon was also destroyed on purpose and practically all of the great stones of the stairs -today put back into their original place- were taken down from there and scattered around the plaza. We also have evidence that many of the offerings which were customarily placed in front of the temples when they were built were now sacked so that in almost all cases we only find empty boxes. Perhaps on such an occasion they also carried for various meters the enormous statue of the goddess of Water -today in the museum- which is supposed was on top the pyramid of the Moon and was found around 1860 -already without her heart of jade- 142 meters to the west of the pyramid. |
She went to see old friends and people she worked with when she lived here from 1986 until 1993. I spent the whole day reading and translating and... did NOT do my laundry.
Then we met downtown and went to "our" old café on 7th near Revolution. Café Francais...
Sat and talked and drank coffee... I had Cuban coffee, one of the pleasures of Tijuana... no boycott here! Then I scribbled and read while she read. Ah yes, we love to read... one of the reasons we are so well suited for each other.
I am in a hurry typing.... must do laundry and then go see a man about a dog... I mean a job. J.O.B. mmmmm I hope I hope I hope
teaching English of course, what else can a gringo do? Work in the factories for fifty dollars a week????
