FALLOUT

Karl glows in the dark from
his years onboard the Savannah

he hitchikes around the country
sleeping on drivers' floors

his shining thumb helps him
get rides at night

and his dogeared seamen's I.D.
raises sunken ship eyebrows

practically no one remembers the
Savannah was the only

nuclear cargo ship ever built
- by the U.S. at least -

and more and more people dismiss
Karl as just another crackpot

old sailor - which doesn't
surprise him at all

or so he says with a
twinkle in his eye

and a dull green glow around
the edge of his yellow tooth .

(wrote day before yesterday from
ancient life in the United States)

I wrote FALLOUT when I was coming home daybeforeyesterday on the trolley after more days in the north twenty miles up the 117th meridian of longitude over there on the northern horizon where I grew up in the hills I dreamed I saw some man fall into a newborn volcano as I was hiking around the hills of La Mesa I shouted out warning but the man wanted to go anyway and

it was like Paricutin swallowed him whole, hole, the mouth of the newborn volcano was like a pair of lips and

you must realize by now where I am going with this

anyway I got home and slept better and dreamt we were on a guided tour and saw

I forget what we saw but the next day yesterday Tere and I went out to our new house our new home in Nueva Tijuana upstairs with plenty of sunlight EVEN IN THE GREY RAIN oh it will be hot there in the summer yes we will sweat at night and dream of cold beer mmmm hmmm it is a lovely little home and I am

moving in next week and so is she

we went to see the Gibson film.  It is a beautiful piece of Hollywood trash.  It radically distorts the gospel - especially all the Holy-Weird hollywood Shit that Gibson (writer, producer, director) invents about the devil sneaking around Jerusalem smirking and sneering and mocking Jesus.  I am rather certain that Satan would have done something like that, since I, like Gibson, am a product of medieval propaganda, BUT it Does NOT appear anywhere in the gospels and therefore I can only say No.  Not true to your text, Sir.

But aside from some other plot points I am too picky my nose.  The film is a stunning tour de force.  Unfortunately, as a religious man, myself, I am going to hold Gibson to a higher standard, here.  He has not only invented (dare I say, lied), and exagerated, but... the film is, itself, a graven image.  Thou shalt not make for worship, boy.

oh hell I've said enough.  The film is a beautiful piece of work.  That makes it even more... good and evil, I guess.  Like all of us fallen human beings.

And then there is the whole language thing.  It definitely was a trip to see all those European types pretending to be Jews and speaking Aramaic.  And the Latin... I could almost follow the Latin.  And, incidentally, Jesus speaks Latin with Pilate, and I think that is probably true, although the devil is again in the details....

Shut up Daniel you are just giving him power by talking about him.  Gibson, I mean.  Not the devil.

Heh heh that reminds me NOT SATAN CLAUSE

Went to the bookstore on the northeast corner of 35th and Adams (in the San Diego neighborhood called Normal Heights) to look for some music for my son to give for a birthday present.  Also found a whole bunch of Maya books which I resisted all of them, thank you, even though I have no way given up my fascination and Mesoamerican obsession, no.  But I will indulge in this photograph from Tikal, Guatemala, of the "lost world" pyramid... the picture was taken by Dr. Manuel Aguilar of CalStateLA who kindly permits.  Thank you professor!
