Care of the Roaches | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
GENERAL These roaches are called "Hissers" for the obvious hissing sound that they make when they are mad or mating. These are some of the easiest roaches to care for and breed. They are also quite gentle, which means that aside from keeping them as feeders, you can also keep them as pets. HOUSING I keep my colony of around 40-50 Hissers in a 10-gallon standard aquarium with a HEAVY screen lid on top. The lid needs to be HEAVY so that the roaches do not escape. This breed of roach can climb glass quite easily, and I have had a few escapes before I replaced their lid. BEDDING You can use almost anything to nothing on the bottom of your roach cage. I have used potting soil, small animal bedding, and now I'm using paper towels. You can also use newspaper shreddings, dry leaves, almost anything. FEED I usually feed my roaches lettuce and I give them cut up carrots as a special treat each week. I also keep a contant supply of ROACH MEAL in with them in a small container. AS FEEDERS If you plan on feeding Hissers to animals, use freshly born babies. If you feed your animals adult Hissers, they most likely will not digest it properly because the outside of the adult Hisser is hard, while the outside of the baby Hisser is quite soft, especially after a molt. GENDER There is a simple way to tell a male Hisser from a female Hisser. The males will have "horns" on the backs of their heads, while females will have smooth heads. Males also have fuzzy antenna. LIFESPAN These roaches usually live 2-3 years, I have heard. (I've only had mine for about 6 months.) MOLTING Hissers need to molt in order to grow. Their skin splits down the back and slips off as the roach takes in air from the sides of it's body, called spiracles. (This is also where the "Hissing" sound is produced.) It is important not to touch the roach during this process. It will appear white-ish in color and will eventually harden it's new skin and become brown again. OTHER Try to keep climbing accessories in with the roaches such as sticks, egg cartons, paper towel rolls, rocks, and other items in with the roaches. I keep a small animal cave in with mine, they like to all tightly squeeze themselves into it. |
