Angelfish was conceived when Shirley's previous band, Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie, broke up. Herself and three other band members from GBMM created Angelfish, named after Shirl's fish-like appearance and the fact that she murdered her pet goldfish as a 10-year old. Angelfish was met with minimal success. The video for Suffocate Me was played on MTV's 120 Minutes, from which Butch Vig from the then-forming band Garbage promptly requested that Shirl joined Garbage. Angelfish then broke up.
