SOFTWARE DREAMS AND OLDER PCs
Alternative Operating Systems
FreeDos And The Movement

* FreeDos * is one of several * alternative operating systems *. Created and supported by a grass- root [underground] efforts of individual programmers, hackers, and computer users. The goal is to create and support "plain vanilla" operating systems for older computers running MS Dos, and * other "abandoned" operating systems *.

Particular attention is given by FreeDos to include early MS Dos systems operating low powered XTs, ATs, and PCs, 8086, 286, 386, and higher. While older PCs remain, already early versions of MS Dos and "Proprietory" Dos are disappearing.

Since the MS Dos operating system is a known commodity, the developers hope to create a compatible and more power efficient product, with fewer "bugs". These efforts may look like "just another bag of Norton Utilities or PC Tools". However, the FreeDos Kernel and Command.Com is already written. By definition all operating systems have "bags of utilities". Norton and PC Tools utilities were successful only because they were superior to the utilities in MS Dos.

* OpenDos: *
Novell's "proprietary" Dos [Novell Dos 7] has been acquired by Caldera. Having survived Microsoft's court challenges,* Caldrea has released it free as OpenDos *. OpenDos is a complete operating system alternative based on Novell Dos 7, formerly DR-Dos and then Novell Dos. OpenDos is NOT a Beta Test. OpenDos includes personal netware client/server packages, "long filenames", as well as a wide variety of utilities. To maximize program applications "Task Manager" allows simultaneous MultiTasking under DOS. Caldera plans to add TCP/IP support as well as a new GUI. You can use the Microsoft TCP/IP stack to connect to the Internet and Internet Exploder. OpenDos is unlike the FreeDos "plain vanilla" operating system for lower powered computers. OpenDos is a robust operating system equal to MS Dos 6+ thru 7, for higher powered 386, 486, and Pentium PCs. MS Windows runs under OpenDos.

* Freedows Alternative Windows OS Support *.
Freedows is a free OS being developed under the GNU Public License. It's based on a design that will allow it to run programs from multiple OSes simultaneously. In the final release, planned for sometime in 1998, we will include full Windows 16- and 32-bit emulation. This will include both support for Windows 95 applications and for Windows NT applications. Additionally, we will also provide support for DOS applications, likely through a port of FreeDOS. Future plans include a Linux AK in Freedows 1.2 (1999) and MacOS in Freedows 2.0 (2000). In addition, classic systems, such as the Commodore 64 and Tandy CoCo will also have emulations available under Freedows. Look here for more information. http://www.freedows.org/english/index.html

DOS UTILITIES

* PowerDos: *
PowerDos 4.01 is a Freeware Dos Utility program. PowerDos is a utility for Dos, NOT an operating system to replace Dos. PowerDos is a Shareware/ Freeware program that makes using a Dos computer easier. PowerDos has over 70 functions that will make working with Dos a breeze. PowerDos will let you View, Edit, Copy, Delete, Compress, Uncompress, Encode, Decode and Move Files. Also with PowerDos you can...
