Founded in 1976, KanSys Inc. (for Kansas Systems) has produced a variety of software products over the years. Most have been designed to facilitate the use of computers by the blind. Several of those products are now in the public domain, and can be accessed by FTP.

KANSYS Software In The Public Domain Four software products by KanSys Inc. were placed in the public domain on November 15, 1995, and a fifth product on January 31, 1996. They are available by direct mail from company headquarters and from our FTP site on the Internet. Each package includes executables, documentation, and source files in A86 Macro Assembler, Borland Turbo Assembler, and Borland C or C Plus Plus languages.

These are not shareware products; no fee is required or expected for using, copying, or modifying any of them.

Look for files with names like MEMO10.ZIP (the Memo DataBase Program), NAMES35.ZIP (the NAMES DataBase Program), ABRL15.ZIP (AutoBraille 1.5), PRVX61.ZIP (Provox 6.1), and BARB11.ZIP (Barb The Browser 1.1 and related utilities):

(1) MEMO Version 1.0 -- A DOS text memo manager with a speech-friendly interface, cross referencing, and rapid index searches. (Written in Borland C Plus Plus).

(2) NAMES Version 3.5 -- An entry level database package for DOS with a speech-friendly interface. (Written in Borland C).

(3) AutoBraille Version 1.5 -- A memory resident Grade II braille translator for DOS using only 44K memory. (Written in A86 Macro Assembler, support program written in Borland C).

(4) PROVOX Version 6.1 -- A screen review program for DOS, an in-house version of an older commercial package, never before released. It uses 29K memory and has many advanced features. (Written in Borland Turbo Assembler, support program written in Borland C Plus Plus).

(5) Barb The Browser Version 1.1 -- A file browser for DOS which reads plain text, Microsoft WRI, WordStar all versions, WordPerfect versions 5.1 and 6.0, and many PostScript files. Barb can also grab text from within binary files. She can save all or part of anything she can read to a plain text file, and remembers her place in a file between sessions if the file remains unchanged. Barb handles multi-megabyte files. Support programs PROFILE, CRLF, and FREQ are useful tools for exploring and fixing strange files. (Written in Borland C Plus Plus, support programs written in Borland C and C Plus Plus). Current demonstration copies of Turbo Braille and LowRez software are also available by anonymous FTP over the Internet.
