The predictive typer is intended for physically disabled users, although it has been found useful for people with literacy problems. It works alongside any existing word processing software, and monitors keys pressed. It then displays a list of suggested words in a separate window. You can either choose one of the suggestions from the list (by pressing a function key) or type another letter of your word. The suggestions are derived from the letters already pressed, a lexicon of correctly spelt words, and a knowledge of the word patterns and frequencies.
Also included is an on-screen keyboard which allows users who do not wish to use the real Qwerty keyboard to click on a graphical representation of it. This integrates fully with the predictor, and with all other software. A number of useful features exist for editing the lexicons, controlling the appearance of the windows and functioning of the programs. For example you can learn words from a text file into the lexicon, or view and delete recently learnt words. You can choose the font and colours used, and the number of predictions visible.

Penfriend Home Page
Penfriend is not a feature-laden monstrosity. It
has been carefully designed in an attempt to
make it easy to use, easy to understand, and to
do the things that it really needs to do. There
are two main parts to Penfriend. It is a
Predictive Typer, and it has an On-Screen Keyboard.
