THE COMPUTER IN-A-BOX:
Ideally, as if by magic, your computer arrives in -a- box on your doorstep.
You open the box, takeout the computer, and plug -it- in.
Everything is loaded and ready -to- go.
As in a dream , no muss, no fuss, no problems.
Then there are nightmares of ordering Anything -Sight- Unseen.
At long distance, you are truly blind.
Unless you know the "who, what, and how much" you are getting; you will be double- blind.
Beyond pure luck, getting what you want requires more than just knowing the make, model, and price.
BEFORE YOU START:
Before ordering nationally sight- unseen, look around locally.
Go to your local computer and/or office products stores to "Personally Experience" their "working" computer display models.
Note their prices and compare with other local computer stores, classifieds, and online Internet resources.
With the nationwide "volume" of computer and office product "chain" stores; even locally there are bargains to be found.
To find demonstrations of special computer "adaptations" contact your local Disability Services, Education and Training Agencies, that have and use Adaptive Computer Equipment.
Once you have armed and educated yourself, ordering direct from the manufacturer is likely to get you what you want.
REDUCED PRICE:
New -Or- Used, a reduced price is nice.
However, the "true value" is not in the computer equipment; but in the "Manufacturer's Warranty".
Without the Manufacturer's Warranty, you are just buying any computer, anywhere, for any price, from anyone, with any guarantee.
READ THE WARRANTY:
Read the Manufacturer's Warranty. Compare coverage between new -and- used, refurbished -or- reconditioned.
If you are purchasing something "less -than- new", you want a warranty that is closest to that of a "new product".
A reduced price, at any cost, is worthless without the warranty.
WHY BUY DIRECT:
- Purchasing a "custom assembled" newly manufactured computer.
Del Computers are an example of an exclusive "mail- order", made -to- order, custom- assembled, all to customer's specifications.
Every computer that goes down their assembly- line has a specific, and pre-paid, owner waiting at the end.
- Manufacturer's over- stock is common when computers are assembled on a production- line to conform to "generic" product- line specifications.
One size to -fit- all; or several sizes to -fit- all.
Every computer that goes down a specific assembly- line; is just the same as any other computer on that line.
In a high- tech and high -product- turnover industry, over production and stocking are common, due to the inability to predict market demand and competition.
Rather than "dumping" their over stock on the wholesale -discount- market, eroding their current wholesale -retail- market, manufacturers are beginning to directly control their own over stock problems.
Manufacturers of major -brand- name computers and components are now beginning to sell directly to consumers through their Online Company Stores.
- Manufacturer's "newly" Refurbished and/or Reconditioned computers and components are still "USED".
A manufacturer's WARRENTY for recycled, refurbished or reconditioned, computers assures that the reduced price computer will function like a new -full- price computer.
The manufacturer's warranty assures the quality of your computer, and removes much of Your Risk in a sight -unseen- transaction.
FULL WARRENTY:
When purchasing long distance and sight unseen, the warranty assures your protection against long distance frustration, confusion, and "return" shipping charges.
"If Anything Goes Wrong" be aware, these are the items that you should have; but may not get.
Here are the Cost Centers that really reduce the retail price to wholesale.
Some, or all, of the items are included in any Retail Purchase.
You need to determine your priorities, and what you want included in your wholesale direct purchase.
Remember the pre-loaded software included in the computer.

IBM now offers "refurbished" computers.
They claim a reduced price and a full warranty.
Remember there are IBM PCs and IBM 0S2 [Warp4] systems.
IBM OS2 systems require IBM Adaptive Computing products: Screen Reader, Magnifier, and Speech Recognition, Command, Control, and Dictation.

Packard Bell and NEC offer reduced price for over stalked and "reconditioned" computers.
Remember Packard Bell was known to use there own custom mother board, which hard- wires the modem and VGA control functions.
This required replacing the motherboard to up- grade the Modem speed, or the VGA to SVGA Monitors.
Packard Bell entered this market after they lost a court challenge over using "used and reconditioned" parts in their new computers.
