Add/Remove Applications
1. Click Start. 2. Click Settings. 3. Click Control Panel. 4. Double Click Add/Remove Programs. 5. Click the appropriate application. 6. Click Remove. 7. Follow the on screen instructions.

The PC will operate faster with a smaller registry. A fresh installation of Windows runs faster because the registry is smaller. The registry is resident in RAM at all times. How Note: Below are general guidelines and instructions. Exact instructions are impossible as every PC has a different combination of software installed. Keep in mind editing this registry key could cause applications to stop functioning correctly. 1. Load RegEdit. 2. Go to HKEY_Local_Machine\Software. 3. This key contains the names of all the software manufactures with software installed on your PC. 4. Double click this key to see all the applications that exist from that manufacturer in the registry. 5. Delete any key of any software package that is no longer installed. 6. Repeat for every appropriate application.

Click Settings. 4. Set Check for newer versions of stored pages to Automatic. 4. Set the amount of disk space to use to 20. 5. Click ok.
Set your display to the highest refresh rate that your video card can support in the current resolution. Why The refresh rate is how often a screen is refreshed. A higher refresh rate provides a clearer screen and less eyestrain. How Note: Setting a refresh higher than your monitor can handle can cause damage to the monitor itself. A refresh rate is 72hz or higher is recommended for reduced eye strain. Note: This procedure will vary slightly on different video cards below is a basic procedure. 1. Right click on an empty portion of the desktop 2. Click Properties. 4. Click Settings. 5. Click Advanced Properties. 6. Click on Adapter. 6. Click the arrow on Refresh rate drop down menu. 7. The available choices on the drop down menu vary depending on your video card and monitor. First try optimal and see how the screen looks. If optimal is already selected try 75hz. Note: If after changing your refresh rate your monitor image is unreadable. Reboot the PC in safe mode and lower the refresh rate and reboot.
Erase unnecessary files in the windows temporary folder. Why Files are created in this directory are for temporary use. Improper shutdown, crashes or failed installations can cause these not to be cleaned up. Files in this directory are not needed. How 1. Double Click My Computer. 2. Double Click the drive where windows is installed. This is typically drive C. 3. Double Click the windows folder. This is typically C:\Windows. 4. Double Click the temp folder.This is typically C:\Windows\temp. 5. Press control-A to select all files and folders. 6. Press the delete key. 7. If confirmation is asked to delete these files choose yes to all.
Deleted unneeded and unused files from your hard disk to increase free disk space. Why If the free space on your hard disk is low it will impact performance and the ability to defragment the drive or install new applications. How Typically there are many files that are either not used or not needed. These files include unused applications, temporary files and files left over from failed installation. To make sure all these files are not in use close all open applications. To reclaim some disk space the following files can safely be deleted *.tmp, *.bak, *.old, ~*.*. 1. Click Start. 2. Click find. 3. Click files or folders. 4. Enter in the appropriate files to search for(For example, *.tmp, *.bak, *.old, ~*.*) 5. After all the following files are found. it control-A to highlight all the files. 6. Press the delete key. 7. Repeat this for every file type you wish to delete. Note: Important system files are backed up to .bak files. To recover from Windows problems it might be wise to keep these files. To make sure all these files are permanently deleted clear the recycle bin.
Creating, modifying and deleting files causes fragmentation. When files are fragmented, it takes longer for the computer to read or write those files. You should defragment your hard disk every two weeks to maintain an optimal disk. Why Eliminate fragmentation resulting in increased hard disk speed. How 1. Close all applications. 2. Disable your screen saver. 3. Disable all the programs on the taskbar if possible. 4. Click Start. 5. Click Program. 6. Click Accessories. 7. Click System Tools. 8. Click Defrag. 9. Select the drive to defrag. You should defrag every hard disk on your system. This process can take a long time. 10. Click OK. 11. Enable your screen saver. Note: For even more performance, you can purchase Norton Utilities. It includes a disk defragment utility Speed Disk. It can defragment your Virtual Memory file is about ten times faster and does a more thorough job.
If your PC has more than 16MB of RAM, change the Typical role of this machine to Network Server. Why Increase the size of the file and directory cache.
