"I didn't want to do the Batman sequel initially because I was kind of burnt out, and I didn't know what I could bring to it...It's the one movie that I feel more detached from than the others...I never walk into anything without feeling close to it. I did originally feel close to it, but it got away from me a little bit...I realized I relly liked this material: I like Batman, I like Catwoman, I like the Penguin, I like their world. It's a good canvas of characters. I like their duality. And the thing that I really liked about Batman as a comic book property was that they're all fucked-up characters - thats whats so beautiful about them. Unlike other comics, they're just all fucked, the villains and Batman. But that's also the problem - I never see people as villains...we tried to give The Penguin a foundation and a psychological profile. I probably gave it too much, spent too much time on it. But I don't think there's anybody better than Danny at making the horrible acceptable. I liked the fact that some people couldn't decide whetheror not Catwoman was bored. She was never bad. Thats the thing, I never saw any of them as bad, and I never believe it when they say people are bad. I don't have that compass."
