Burton's first project was a short entitled Vincent, followed by a live action short, Frankenweenie. Both of these projects recieved little to no exposure. Frankenweenie was given a PG rating, so Disney would not attach it to any of its films. However Stephen King saw the short, and recommended it to Bonni Lee, an executive at Warner Bros. Lee then showed it to Paul Reubens, the man behind Pee Wee Herman. Paul knew right away Tim would make an excellent choice for a director of his new film, Pee Wee's Big Adventure. The rest, is history.
On the personal side of things, Tim married German artist Lena Gieseke in 1989, during the production of Batman. They separated shortly, during the production of Batman Returns. He began seeing Lisa Marie shortly after, and they are still involved. She has appeared in four of his films to date: Ed Wood, Mars Attacks!, Sleepy Hollow, and Planet of the Apes.
Between Mars Attacks! and Sleepy Hollow, Tim was working on Superman Lives, with a script penned by Kevin Smith. Nicolas Cage was attached to play Superman, while Kevin Spacey was rumored to be a choice for the Green Goblin. However, Burton was not happy with the script, and a narrowing budget caused Warner Brothers to pull the plug. His latest film is Planet of the Apes, a re-imagining of Pierre Boulle's classic 1963 novel.
