Richard is currently the Chief Scientist at the Research & Technology Group of the Defence Clothing and Textiles Agency (DCTA), Colchester,Essex.

He has worked for the Ministry of Defence for 24 years
in Research & Development in all aspects of functional Textiles  for Defence Forces, concentrating on protection of the individual  from the natural environment and battlefield threats.
 

 

The lecture will cover the following topics

MILITARY THREATS and military operational scenarios.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION  including Thermal Insulation, WaterVapour Permeable materials, Phase Change Materials, high performance wicking/ drying materials.

BALLISTIC PROTECTION  against bomb fragments, bullets, etc.

FLAME & HEAT PROTECTION   including reactive insulation using intumescence and Shape Memory Materials.

CAMOUFLAGE, CONCEALMENT AND DECEPTION,  wide spectrum camouflage of the individual and equipment.

SMART/ REACTIVE MATERIALS,  as above, but including colour changes, variable insulation etc.

INTEGRATED COMBAT CLOTHING SYSTEMS,  for future military forces.
