Innovation in Textile Finishing

A TEXTILE INSTITUTE SEMINAR

in conjunction with textile consultants LINE
Innovative technology, environmental demands and higher customer expectations have changed our perception of textiles in recent years, both in terms of their look and their capability. Fibres and fabrics can now be engineered to introduce increased function, new design and manufacturing potential, and bring advantages to apparel performance whilst still enhancing their aesthetic appeal.
This seminar will be suitable for:
          • Textile and cloth buyers in retail and manufacture
          • Garment and fabric technologists
          • Textile designers
          • Fashion designers from active wear and innovative sectors
          • Fabric producers – weavers/ knitters/finishers
          • Lecturers from textile and fashion/clothing courses
Innovation in Textile Finishing
The latest developments in textile technology have much to offer the contemporary fashion industry. To meet the expectations of a more demanding and informed consumer, new properties and functions can be added via the fibre, the yarn or by finishing methods. Utilising the finishing route can often be more cost effective and practical. Through finishing, fabrics can be manipulated to be hard, soft, shiny or matt. They can be moulded, can protect, and they can now also be bio-active and interactive. New ways of combining textile layers are introducing performance composites capable of a wide range of functions and responses. The need to produce a more environmentally acceptable product as part of a sustainable supply chain is encouraging investigation into the benefits that finishing treatments can offer. The variety of finishing methods available brings versatility to both garment design and fabric production, and is a vital ingredient in ensuring that textiles perform and offer all that the informed consumer will require in the future.

Innovation in Textile Finishing is an overview of the most directional and interesting developments in this area. Some are currently available, others are in the early stages of development, whilst others may not be commercially available for several years. The role of familiar and traditional finishing methods in the creation of contemporary and desirable aesthetics surfaces will also be included.

The presentation will cover the following areas:
1. Layering, coating and the creation of composite multi-layers, including ultrasonic bonding, needle punching, flameless lamination, plasma techniques, membrane technologies and weatherproof finishes.
2. Chemical finishes and dyes, including digital printing, the use of conductive inks in  wearable technology, personal well being finishes and protective safety applications.
3. Physical surface manipulation and decoration, including laser, water jet finishing, flocking, shearing and the creation of surface dimension.

It will be presented by Ros Hibbert of LINE, who has previously given talks on her research into textile innovation to leading textile and apparel companies in the UK, Europe, Japan and USA. She has recently written a book on the subject. Her latest research into finishing follows up this work and gives a fascinating insight into the future of textile design and function. Her presentation will be supported by fabric samples for participants to examine, touch and smell. Resource details will also be provided for those who wish to follow up on the information contained in Innovation in Textile Finishing
