Chapter 3 Page 18

"What's this?" Lieutenant Dak Meindauk motioned skyward.

Buon Tupok followed his Executive Officer's guesture skyward. A dark shape was rapidly descending toward their airfield. "Not sure" he responded to Dak. The shape and color reminded him of a bat, but must obviously be some type of aircraft. "Maybe that is the Foundation's plane" Buon ventured with his hand shading his eyes.

Dak seemed to be unconvinced as he stared at the mysterious craft. "Not like anything I've ever seen Captain."

"Air Ops would have warned us if it were hostile." Buon said casually as he turned his attention back to the loading of their gear onto the Gulfstream business jet. However, Buon like all others at the airfield realized that the craft was not one of the rare VSTOL aircraft so popular in other major countries. The craft was of the general size and shape of the old B1 bombers of the USA, but the similarity stopped there. Large engines in the wing body pulsated with uncharacteristic silence that made it evident that the craft was not powered with jet engines. Buon found himself tranfixed to the sight od the dark craft as it touched down on the parking tarmac a hundred meters away. It was too far to recognize the people that were climbing down from the belly of the craft, but the colorful jumpsuits proclaimed them to be Americans. Buon turned to Dak and said with a measure of disgust "Looks like we're going to be babysitters too."

Dak gazed at the distant scene as he replied "Ops said that an American contingent was coming along. I didn't expect some tourists dressed for a holiday."

The two officers watched the foreigners disembark from the craft as one of their lories came to a stop beside their craft. Several people loaded baggage into the lory, but only four people in camouflaged battle dress uniforms got into the lory. The lory the proceeded directly toward the Gulfstream Executive jet. "Well, maybe the Americans are not as simple minded as I thought " Buon contemplated "but they will undoubtedly be a royal pain in the butt."
