Oneida Finishes Well at Annual Pageant of Bands
By Carolyn Godfrey

    The Oneida High School Band
was one of over 40 groups to take
pan in the recent Pageant of Bands
in Sherburne. Under-the direction of
David Hawthorne, the band made
their first appearance in the Pageant,
which was a celebration of the 50th
anniversary of the annual event.
 Boasting their motto, "Pride -
Excellence - Tradition," Oneida
competed in the Class AAA divi-
sions, against bands from Lake
Lehman, Pennsylvania; Norwich,
Phoenix and Carthage. On Thursday
night, the Jazz Band finished in third
place with a score of 90.5, behind
Norwich, 95.0; and first place
Phoenix, 97.0.
    Saturday featured an early morn-
ing Concert Band competition before
the Band and Colorguard par-
ticipated in the afternoon parade
under hot, blazing sunshine.
    Earning 87.5 points in Concert
competition, the band finished just
two points behind first place winner
Lake Lehman. Once again, the
group trailed Lake Lehman in
Parade standings, but finished with
an impressive 84.5, ahead of
Phoenix, Norwich and Carthage.
