Wolverine's Strategy
Any idiot can win with Wolverine. His combos are so easy
and powerful that a trained monkey could win a
tournament with him. Do you really need a strategy
section for Wolverine? Oh well, for those of you who
choose to succumb to the "cheap side" here's my two
cents....
Advantages
Speed, fast attacks and comboable supers make
Wolverine the most dangerous character on the ground. A
Wolvie player should be constantly dashing in,
relentlessly attacking until their opponent makes a
mistake.
His head stomp and it's ability to cancel along with
his awesome jump makes Wolverine a dangerous character
in the air as well.
Wolverine has very effective supers. Each one is
incredibly useful and none of them are generally a waste
. Expect the supers to be flying when Wolverine is on
the screen.
Wolverine's throw range and priority are just nuts.
He can out throw anyone except maybe Chun Li or Zangief.
He can even combo his throws in the corner.
Disadvantages
Wolverine has no long range attacks, making him a
target for keep away characters. This isn't really a
problem for him because he's got the speed to break
through any keep away defense. However, he's forced to
fight up close which might be dangerous against
characters like Zangief and Jin.
Wolverine's Strong punches no longer link together
infinitely. The most number of times that they can be
linked is twice. No more super meter cheese charging for
him.
Wolverine's Berserker Barrage, Tornado Claw, Fatal
Claw and Berserker Barrage X will all leave him
vulnerable when blocked.
Many characters have incredible air dominance in
this game. Wolverine either has to stay on the ground or
somehow get above his opponenets to beat them.
Offense
Dash and attack, dash and attack. Learn a safe
ground combo for Wolverine and constantly pull it off.
If they block, do a move that'll leave him safe from
counter attack. if they get hit, continue on into a
combo finishing with a super.
If you find that your opponent is sucessfully
blocking all your attacks, walk up and throw. That's
what all the cheap Wolvie players do around here.
Unlike the other versus games, Wolverine's air
combos are not to be used as the main part of his
offense. They are now extremely weak. Of course, they're
still useful, but his ground combos do more damage.
When all else fails and you get desperate, go into a
Berserker Rage. You'll be faster and probably be able to
break through your opponents defense.
When dashing in, watch out for people with fast low
attacks, such as Chun Li, or people with prioritized air
attacks, like Gambit. If you dash in blindly, they'll
learn your pattern and counter accordingly.
Defense
Wolverine doesn't really need to defend himself
because most of his time spent in a fight will be on
offense. However, he can defend himself when he needs
to.
Wolverine's launcher is a good air defender. His
feet will be way up in the air and his body low to the
ground, allowing him to hit his opponents before they
hit him.
If you have an opponent that likes jumping in on you
, pull off a Fatal Claw at the last possible moment.
Wolverine will jump behind them and they'll get hit by
the energy blades as they're trying to attack.
The drill claw is a great move to use when you need
to escape a counter attack or beam super. Just watch out
because Wolverine can't block until he's landed from a
drill claw, making it a risk to pull off if you land
near your opponent.
Onslaught
First Form - Ok, after some helpful E-mail from some
Wolverine players, I've finally got some tips for ya
guys! A good attack for Wolvie to use is the C.Fierce.
I'm told that it will stun Onslaught enough for Wolvie
to be able to repeat until he's dead. I'm not sure if it
's useful for the "crouching in the hole" strategy when
Onslaught is using the Mega Optic Blast. Just to be safe
, stick to C.Jab, C.Forward. You could also use the
Berserker Rage super in conjunction with these combos so
that Wolvie can do more damage before he's countered.
Berserker Barrage X works ok, but Onslaught will
teleport out of it. If you can, try not to fight
Onslaught with this guy. Wolverine's lack of attack
power and inability to combo Onslaught puts him at an
extreme disadvantage.
Second Form - You should use the general Ultima
Onslaught strategy and block a lot. When he's open, hit
him with a J.Fierce, J.Roundhouse combo and resume
blocking. Be careful with that J.Roundhouse though cause
it leaves him flailing his legs, preventing him from
blocking in case Onslaught manages to shoot out a few
eye beams. When possible hit him with a Fatal Claw. You
should position it so that Wolverine will jump right up
into his face for maximum damage.
Fighting Wolverine
You're gonna have to turtle quite a bit. Face it,
Wolverine is gonna get you stuck on the corner because
he's faster than anyone else. Push block all of his
normal attacks and when you've got a window, take to the
air. He's more manageable up there.
Throw a lot! I know by experience that Wolverine
players love to throw. Return the favor! Even if you don
't get to throw, chances are he was trying to and you'll
tech hit to safety.
Remember that Wolverine is all offense. He will
constantly be dashing in and attacking. Often, Wolverine
players will not block and will leave themselves open
for a quick counter attack. Just learn their pattern.
They all have one.
Some Wolvie players have figured out that the head
stomp to Roundhouse kick combo is almost uncounterable
and will set them up nicely for a Berserker Barrage X or
Fatal Claw combo. Just anticipate and pull off an air
defender.
Wolverine doesn't have much air priority. If you
constantly super jump, he'll end up following you.
That's where you kick his butt. Just keep meeting him
in the air and sending him back down. Watch out though
because his air throw range is very far.
If he tried to hit you with either a Berserker
Barrage X or a Fatal Claw, do not push block. If you
push block, you'll miss an oppurtunity to counter attack.
Just patiently wait out the attack. In both cases, he'll
land right in front of you, still recovering and
vulnerable. Give him your best shot.
When you see him pull off a Berserker Rage, try to
super jump. If he's to close, it's best to just block
and wait it out. Push block a lot and if you manage to
push him far enough away, go for that super jump. It's
hard for Wolverine players to control him in the air
while in hyper mode. Another thing you can try is
attacking him. Wolverine players lose their brains and
forget to block in this mode.
