The IPS Medical Department provides medical care to prisoners and prison staff in every IPS facility in the following areas:
The IPS operates 16 medical clinics in its prisons. These clinics operate 24 hours a day providing the following services:
The IPS Medical Center
The IPS Medical Center, operated by the Medical Department, and located within the Ayalon complext near the town of Ramle in central Israel, contains 5 functional treatment units:
Prisoners requiring supplementary diagnostic and/or therapeutic tests are taken from the IPS Medical Center to outpatient clinics and other treatment units in general hospitals.
Dental Medicine
16 Dental clinics are operated in the prisons all over the country.
The dental services available to prisoners are: prevention and maintenance, surgical treatment and basic prosthetics.
AIDS Testing
In accordance with IPS policy, every incoming prisoner is tested for AIDS antibodies (funded by the Ministry of Health).
In 1995 more than 39,000 AIDS tests were performed. Only 76 of these proved
positive. Of the latter, 15 developed into full AIDS during the prisoner's
imprisonment.
