WCW Mayhem

(or a game that’s based on the WCW’s suck factor)

Made by: Electronic Arts and Kodiak Interactive Software

For: Nintendo 64 and Playstation (note this review is based of the N64 version)

When THQ moved on to make games based on the WWF, Electronic Arts stepped up to the bat to make WCW video games. EA got Kodiak to develop this game. Kodiak used real WCW wrestlers to get motion captured moves to make the game as real as possible. What Kodiak created was a piss poor wrestling game that lacked a lot. The character graphics look pretty good until they move. Wrestlers move very unnaturally across the ring and in fact move their legs move as if they are skating (thanks to Gamepro for pointing that out). The game engine absolutely sucks. You build up a meter by hitting your opponent and then you can do a finishing move (which most likely isn’t the wrestler’s finishing move) when it flashes. If you get hit or don’t attack for a second the bar goes down but the A.I. hardly ever amounts an attack so it isn’t hard to fill the bar up five or six times during a match. This game’s big thing was that it was the first wrestling game that you could go back stage and fight but it blows that too. The back stage areas are just big rectangles with different skins. Unless you want every single wrestling game out there don’t even think once about buying this piece of junk.
