Sirana's Soulfire
By Brad Hoot (unaowl@icanect.net) February, 1997
This spell directly attacks the victims soul. It is not actual fire, and does not ignite combistible materials, or succumb to restrictions placed upon fire. Damage done by Soulfire is not physical, but a depridation and maliciousness inflicted directly on a victim's soul. However, since this does damage the vistim, the victim does seem to have been burned, horribly. If the person is killed, the will appear to be a burned out, charred skeleton. The damage can only be healed by a cleric above 10th level, not by potions, herbs, regeneration, other magical items (except those that duplicate their effects at 13th level or above, due to the lessened nature of magical items), or other magical endeavors, except a Wish. The pure torment inflicted on the soul causes 1d8+1 points of damage per level of the caster up to 20d8+20, save vs. spell for half. Creatures slain by soulfire become revenants intent on the caster's death in 1d12+1 days. This can be prevented by immersion in holy water and then a proper buriel. The Charisma of the victims of soulfire is permanently lowered by 2 points. If this would bring the victim's Charisma to or below 0, the remaining points are taken from Wisdom after the victim's Charisma reaches 1. There is, however, a danger to weilding this potent spell. There is a 25% chance, minus the caster's level (a 20th level caster would have a 5% chance), per casting, that the Soulfire is somewhat uncontrollable, and the caster suffers damage equal to half that inflicted on the victim. The caster also then loses 1 point of Charisma, and heals the same as a Soulfire victim. The caster, if killed becomes a wraith instead. Example: Rollo is a 19th level mage casting Soulfire. He has an 6% chance of being exposed. The DM rolls 92 points for damage, and an unlucky 04 on the d100. Rollo would get 46 points of damage, and lose 1point of Charisma. If he had less that 46 hit points, he would have died and risen as a wraith in 1d12+1 days. The material components for this spell are a baatezu scale and a chunk of brimstone.
