The races of the Shattered World worship many gods, but it is only the dwarves that preserve the memory of the god who created the world. This is their creation myth:
Long, long ago, the world was a void, empty of light and life. Many gods inhabited this void, among them Vaestrael, and Gra’Hazad. They all wished to shape the world in accordance with their desires. The gods argued and bickered amongst themselves, but then Vasgren offered to create a whole planet on which each deity would have a sphere of influence. And so it was decided, and Vasgren worked at his forge for 22 days and created the world. He forged the great sphere of the planet, and chiseled out the mountains, and hammered the oceans, and raised the continents, and when he was done he offered the world for division by the gods. Since he had created the world Vasgren got to choose first a domain to rule over, and remembering fondly the days he spent finely chiseling every detail of the great peaks of the planet, he chose the mountains. And to rule over the mountains for all eternity he created the dwarves. And he gave to the dwarves fire from his forge, so that they would benefit from its warmth and from Vasgren’s wisdom for all eternity. And he taught them the art of smithing, so that there has never been and never will be a race that is their equal in that art.
Vasgren is the only dwarven god to survive the Shattering. He is the Creator, and also the god of Fire, Smithing, and merciless Justice. His followers are usually neutral good, but can be of any non-evil alignment. He is portrayed as a large dwarf with a bare chest and wielding a two-handed hammer. This hammer is called Gronxir and it is the hammer he used to create the world. It is also a weapon of great power and figures prominently in many legends about Vasgren. His holy symbol is a hammer made of iron. His priests get the Blacksmithing nonweapon prificiency at no cost. While Vasgren is a great warrior, he is also a great craftsman and a great healer. Jewelers and engineers often ask for his blessing when beginning a particularly ambitious project.
Perhaps more than any other god, Vasgren suffered because of the shattering. Seeing his creationblown apart into a thousand fragments caused him to become very depressed and to stop actively participating in the affairs of the world. While his priests still exist, there has not been a paladin of Vasgren in hundreds of years. It is believed that if the world is restored, Vasgren will once again become active and will restore the dwarves to their former glory.
