MY FAVOURITE FREE WEB & DESKTOP TOOLS
Skype
Free net phone plus IM plus paid add-ons. It works for me.
Try SAM - Answering Machine for Skype, it's pretty cool.

Firefox browser
plus the "View This Page in IE" extension.
Try other extensions, some are very cool.

Takes care safely and flawlessly of my several POP3 accounts.
Pegasus Mail ? I used it for years. Great, secure, but old fashioned.
Mozilla Thunderbird ? Nice but short on features. Outlook? Forget it!

IncrediMail
When I tried its first beta, I immediately fell in love.
It's matured since. Tons of features, voice mail included. Adware.
Find more cool stuff for Incredimail at Bomis: IncrediMail Sites.

ICQ (I seek you)

Still my favourite chat program.
Well, maybe for voice chat I prefer Skype.
Want another IM? Try here, they all are good and free.
To access ICQ Network from other computers use  ICQ2Go.

Trillian

Talk to your ICQ, IRC, MSN, AIM and Yahoo buddies in one interface.
Yahoo and AOL hate and block it, you may have to download a patch.

eVoiceSaver (ex-VMail) , HandyBits
Two great voice mail freebies, I used them for voice mail.
Now I use Eudora and Incredimail for voice mail as well.

Popcorn
Ultralight portable multibox (not since v1.48) emailer.
No registry entries. I always carry my old v1.47 with me on a floppy.

POP Peeper
I use it to view my POP3/Yahoo/Hotmail mail before downloading
and deleting junk and viruses from all my accounts. Neat and free.

Magic Mail Monitor | PalMail | PopTray | EmC
Similar, very good, I like them less though.
Each for its own reasons.

Zone Alarm Personal Firewall
One of the best free firewalls around.
Use one. Install one today!

Startup Monitor and Startup Control Panel
Monitor detects any new program trying to add itself to Startup.
Allow/disallow it, can change it later with the Control Panel.

Ad-aware and Spybot-Search&Destroy
Monitor stops them, Panel manages them, Ad-aware and S&D kill them.
Adware & spyware removers. Find whatever antivirus does not.

Windows Startup Inspectors
Scans/gets info about all programs in Windows Startup Folder and Registry.
Remove harmful programs like spyware, virus, dialers! Very useful.

Greatis Startup Application Database
Identifies and categorizes Startup programs abbreviations.
Categories: necessary, useless, optional, dangerous.
See also WheresJames Startup Apps arranged by popularity.

ProcessLibrary.com
The online resource for process information.

and.doxdesk.com: parasite

and the ports to which they attach themselves .

Default Password List
for every router [and firewall and server and operating system and...]
ever made. Got it? Change all passwords at once !!!

Go!Zilla Monster Downloads

Schedules and resumes broken downloads, v.3.9x and 4.x heavy and buggy.
My advice - get the good old version 3.5 from Oldversion.com.
Prejudiced against GoZilla? Try
Fresh Download , My GetRight , Accelerator Plus ,
NetAnts , FlashGet or Dlexpert.

Serif PhotoPlus 5
Instead of buying (or cracking) Photoshop,
get this gem - it does all you need, and for free!!!

Picasa
Probably the best digital photo organizer, instant photo albums,
sharing & printing. Version 2 even better.

Irfan View

View and edit your graphics, change formats, view movies,
change wallpapers, TWAIN support and more, for free!
Try the new Fresh View , a very close contender.

UnFREEz
Tiny, simple, basic, neat GIF animator,
I simply quit using all others.

Flash Movie Extract Pilot
Extracts/plays/saves cached Flash movies. Simple and easy.
Save before closing your browser!

VideoFrame
Extracts selected or all frames from video movies. Simple and effective.
If you need more sophisticated options use Video2Photo.

EditPad , SuperEdi , NoteTab (the best)
Definitely my favourite free text editors.
I use them all. Each for a different purpose.

Filzip
Instead of buying (or cracking) WinZip
try this freebie - it really does more than you need.
Don't like FilZip? Try other great free zippers.

WS_FTP LE 5.08
This old workhorse never let me down yet.
Many newer, cooler free FTP programs around.

EndItAll
Before installing any software I always use this gem
to quit all programs with one single click. Mirror download site.
But you might like SmartClose even more.
ATNotes
The best sticky notes freebie around. Multilingual. Friendly. Configurable.
Never forget birthdays, appointments and other events again!

Phone Deck
Cool and simple telephone address book and dialer.
I've been using it for several years.

Dimension 4
The best free time synchronizer I know.
I've been using it for ages.

Power Dimmer
The smallest and simplest screensaver, 2K/XP only.

NetRun
Starts all my on-line apps on connection, quits when I disconnect.
Exactly what I needed. Simple, helpful, user-friendly.

AddaButton

Add new buttons in MSIE 5.5+ toolbar, launch from within IE!
Or else - use them instead of IE. My advice for now - Firefox.

WebBrain , Refdesk , Google , Ask Jeeves
My very favourite search engines.
Each for entirely different reasons.

Winamp 2.x
Probably the best MP3 player around.
It has a cool remote control - Winamp Pilot - and
thousands of skins to download, the best of them at:
Winamp and 1001winampskins.
Winamp 3 extremely disappointing.
Version 5.0x feels OK. Old skins remain compatible.

n.player | UltraPlayer
just a couple of Winamp's strong rivals

CDex
Rips music from CD, saves in WAV, MP3, OGG, VQF, APE format.
Very easy to use, configurable and free, supports CDDB. Tops.

Hosted Scripts
Free Remotely Hosted CGI Scripts.
I use them in my site. Reliable. Smooth.

Push The Freakin' Button! (PTFB)
Will automatically close any dialog box you like.
Great for closing these annoying cookie boxes. Neat!

Surf In Peace (SIP)
Destroys annoying pop-up windows. Highly configurable.
Works with all browsers, my old Netscape 4.8 included.

Emerald PopStop
Destroys IE popups and Messenger popups (in 2000/XP). I use it and SIP.
To kill Messenger popups only use ShootTheMessenger .
Tried Pop-Up Stopper instead of Emerald and liked it too.

MWSnap capture | Hardcopy
I use them for capturing parts of my desktop
along with Irfan View which has a capture function too.

Hot Key Plus
Launches applications using the 'Windows' keys.
No installation. That's why I like it more than others.

ShutDown
Shutdown, reboot, log off, screensaver, skins, very neat.
Worthy replacement of Karen's Show Stopper.

Arachnophilia 4

Still my choice of HTML editor, along with NoteTab.
Tops, very rich in options. Version 5 is Java, I don't like it.

1st Page 2000
They claim in 2000 it was the ultimate free HTML/Script Editor.
Four years later: tons of great free HTML editors around.

Check for broken links in your site for free!

Definitely THE free in-site search engine service.
The proof - I put it in my main page.

Drive Bar
I hate Windows explorer! Haven't used it for years.
Try Drive Bar , Salamander , Windows Commander ,
2xExplorer , Gyula's Navigator , freeCommander ,
JExplorer , Pablo Commander , EF Commander ,
Advanced Explorer or WinFrigate Lite.

Lockergnome

Several trendy and nice e-zines there.
But I like them less and less:

One day a page I linked to from here, got hacked by a spy/adware punks.
A Lockergnome guy wrote a warning in their zine with my name & URL in it,
instead of emailing me like anyone else would have done.
I got bad publicity for nothing. Do I still like them? Take a wild guess.
.
pirated sites!! aaarrgghh...
I never understood why people steal Web pages, but they do.
Why did Roy and Sissy steal my pages instead of linking to me???
Roy stole ALL my links pages, Sissy my bridge links page.
