Humans are not for the slow. You have to be fast to do anything with your mages. I love the humans, but I can admit that others are better at the mages than I, a lot better in fact. Now I'm not saying I'm good enough to say that I am not better, I wouldn't know, I've never been on Kali (but I hear it's great :)). But I do have some (I think) decently good modem buddies :) Anyway...

Mage: The mage is one of the best units in the game, if you know how to use them. I will say how I use them, spell by spell.
Mage Tower:
Not a spell, but the bulidling that they are trained in. When you first build a tower, train a mage first. Then research blizzard. The reason is: by the time blizzard is done, your mage will have around 200 magic points.
Blizzard:
The best spell in the game. It's better than Death and Decay is, not because of damage, but because of how it looks. The blizzard comes down diagonally, so it's harder to tell where it's hitting.
Try invisibility on a mage, then move the mage into the enemy village. go right between the gold mine and the town hall, then cast blizzard on yourself, don't worry, a mage's own blizzard can't hurt him. I must admit, if you use this tactic, your mage will most likely die, but that mage would only have to kill 3 peasants to make it worth it! And trust me, you will kill more than 3 if you do it right.
Try casting slow on battleships, then cast blizzard on them, the slow will cut their speed in half, so it will have a speed of three!
The range of a blizzard is about one screen.
Invisibility:
This is another very good spell. The computer's units can 'see' your invisible units, but a human player cannot. So don't even research invisibility if you are playing the computer. Try casting invisibility on your transport. Then just sail right between all of the enemy ships
Cast invisibility on a paladin, then send the palading to cast exorsism on a death knight, be sure the paladin has 255 magic points, it takes them all to kill a death knight. Cast invisibility on a peasant, then cast flame sheild on it. If the peasant attacks, the invisibility will fade out, but just standing there and letting your flame shield hurt them isn't attacking!
Polymorph:
This is not the best spell, it's almost useless unless you cast it on a dragon. It would be a lot better if it didn't take 200 magic points. I only use it on invisible raids: Cast invisiblility on a mage, send your invisible mage into your opponet's base, and find a death knight or dragon to plymorph. It would be better just to look for the dragon, you could send an invisible paladin to kill the death knight, and it's a lot cheaper. The range of polymorph is also about a screen.
Slow:
Cuts the speed of a unit in half, also cuts their attack power in half. Get a few mages, and cast it on an attacking group, then blizzard them. It saves your men a lot of work. Cast it on a dragon, then laugh as you watch your rangers kill it.
Fire Shield:
Creates a fire shield around a unit. My favorite way to use this is cast it on an enemy unit just before he gets in a transport. It hurts the transport, and will eventually sink it! Or cast it on one of the units in an attacking group. If they stick together it hurts everyone around him, if they split up, it's easier for your men to kill them!
Fireball:
This spell sucks, if you can find a use for it, E-mail me, but as of yet, I haven't.

Paladin
Healing:
Not much use if you're playing a human opponet, because usually games go too fast to make it any use. But against the computer, an incredibly good spell. Holy Vision:
I think this spell is a lot better than the eye the orcs have. I don't use it much (becuase by this time I have the whole map scouted out and plenty of flying machines. Exorsism:
A very useful spell. A paladin with 255 magic points can kill a death knight instantaneously with this. He could also kill around three skeletons.
