1.2 Completing Level 30

One of the most frequently asked questions of all time is "How do I complete level 30 of Doom II?". Here's how -
  1. You find yourself in a small room. Pick up all the ammo, weapons and power-ups before stepping into the teleporter.
  2. You will appear in the slime at the bottom of a flight of giant steps. Make your way to the top - you bring down the 'step' above you by pressing the different-textured bit at one end of the 'step'.
  3. Once there, find the switch - it's in an alcove in the middle of the end wall and looks like a helmet painted on the wall. Press the button and the platform in the slime at the bottom of the level will start to rise.
  4. Go down to the platform and bring it down by pressing it. The platform will now lower, and you can climb on.
  5. As it rises again you should be able to see a hole in the forehead of the demon. As the platform rises you have to use your rocket launcher, timing it just right so that your rockets go into this hole as you fire them.
  6. When the platform reaches the top, jump off (try and put another rocket in the hole as you fall) and start again... You need to score three direct hits to end the level.

1.3 Demo Problems

Some WADs include their own demos. However, this can cause problems if the version of the game the demo was recorded in is different from the one you're using - the game will crash when the demo starts playing back.

If you are not using Doom v1.9, then the best thing to do is just upgrade to v1.9 - the upgrade patch can be downloaded for free off the internet. Check my page on Upgrade Patches for more details...

If you are using v1.9 and the game crashes because of a demo, it means the demo comes from an older version of the game. If you're quick, you should be able to start the game up before the demo starts to playback, and then the rest of the WAD should run OK...

The alternative is to strip the demos out of the WAD. This can be done using a handy utility called KillDemo. Just run KillDemo on the offending WAD file and the demos will be removed. Otherwise your WAD will be left intact...
