LEVEL OF THE WEEK
Friday 14th November NO NEW RELEASES SINCE Quest Of The Avatar |
Large three-keys-and-an-exit level with some nice touches and a strong rpg feel to it, but spoilt by too many large featureless rooms and vast empty courtyards. You wake in your tomb in a dank crypt, brought back from the dead by the gods to defeat Korax. Sounds a little like Blood... | |
1 | Hub Of Pain | The creator of this three level hub designed levels for the official 'Death Kings' add-on pack for Hexen, and you can see why. Well thought-out, beautifully constructed, lots of attention to detail, and oozing atmosphere, if a little foggy in places... |
2 | Zenith Citadel | Large, atmospheric level with some amazing design and lighting. Fairly tough in
places, but never too hard, and no annoying traps lurking around every corner... One of the best
Hexen levels I've seen.
Occasionally crashes when you try and use a lift in the temple. |
3 | Centromere | Impressive set of six levels - one huge hub level, four level off it, and one secret level which can also be played in deathmatch. All are nicely designed, and damned hard. |
4 | LychGate | Another stunning level from Nick Taylor, featuring some brilliant design and architecture, and plenty of monsters and puzzles to keep you busy... |
5 | Temple 2 | Six level hub featuring some excellent level design, atmospheric effects and thoroughly evil traps around every corner. Nightmare inducing masterpiece... |
6 | Castle Of Defeat | A large and fairly impressive castle-style level. Some impressive settings from the moat and
broken bridge behind you at the start to the chapel, clocktower and battlements of the fortress. Throughout
the level you also have to watch out for a wyvern swooping around over the settlement. Nicely detailed, well
though-out, and fairly challenging.

7 | Caldera | Another six level hub. Some interesting and bizarre design and effects in places - this
is the first time I've seen a level that incendiary bombs you for walking on the grass! Some of the other
traps and special effects (ghost monsters, for example) are more sensible though. A good looking level,
if a little hard and confusing in places...

8 | Hexelent | Impressive level set in an earthquake-prone mine. Fight your way through the shafts and tunnels, watching out for traps, monsters and gaping chasms. Nicely detailed and fairly difficult... |
9 | Chuxen | Challenging six level hub. Some nice design in places, and very difficult, with hordes of monsters springing out at you from behind every pillar, teleporting in behind you, even dropping down at you through the glass ceilings... If you like your levels to be good looking, and packed with monsters and traps, you'll love Chuxen. |
10 | Mission Arrgh | Nicely designed little level with plenty of tricks and traps ranging from the inevitable 'leap of faith' invisible bridge to rooms that totally re-arrange themselves as you enter, and an outside area where night falls while you battle your way through the level... There's some nice design and lighting, and of course any level in which your goal is to find the 'sacred doll of arrgh' has to be worth a laugh! |
