Story: Basically, the game's story revolves around a young man named Fei (who suffers from amnesia), who is struggling against ghosts of the past and the monsters of the present, which somehow, are connected, even though he cannot yet realize what a mess he is in, and what awaits him further on. Throughout the story, he'll meet many different people and places, some allies, some enemies, and most important, he'll learn the true reason behind the agendas of all these people, something that won't be pretty, as compared to other games in this genre. The Game Itself: The game is played mos fo the time in a true 3D map, which means you can rotate the screen to your liking. Of course, this reveals at sometimes important (and hidden) stuff laying around. Although confusing at first, you'll get used to the controls pretty fast, I'm sure. Combat involves both characters and, their respective "gears", of whom I'll talk about now. 'Gears' are mecha of some sorts (giant robots-androids) which must be piloted by a person. Depending on that particular person, the Gear may or may not show up it's true potential, so, a pilot's skill is the true heart of the Gear. To make more notable the impact of these Gears in the game, I'll say that's everything starts because of one of these machines. Gears can be used for war, but there are some that can perform other activities (like drilling). All of them are pretty cool, indeed. Music and Sounds: I cannot recall who are the composers of the music, but what I won't forget is this game's beautiful soundtrack. Every piece of music in this games is awesome, I don't know where to begin to express how good it really is. Sound-wise, well, it's Square quality, so 'nuff said already. Final Lowdown: XENO ain't a perfect game, although it sures looks like so from reading my review. Flaws? Well... at times, the story can get a lil' bit tedious and repetitive, and if you add the fact that you cannot control what characters say (yep, no text speed! h-e-l-p!) and that there's lot of stuff to be read, it can get pretty anoying (specially at the beggining of disc 2). But overall, to a true RPG gamer, this won't detract from the fun that XENO has to offer. I really recomend this game. Gizmo's "Did you Know?": The anime scenes in the game (there are plenty, but not as many as I hoped) were made by some of the people behind such cool anime flicks like 'Ghost in the Shell' and the hit TV show 'Evangelion'. |
