Recommended Preserver Spells List



RECOMMENDED PRESERVER SPELL SELECTION:

Not all of the spells available to the Preserver function as the official tomes of knowledge would indicate, and some spells are significantly more useful than others of the same level of difficulty. This list is intended to be an aid to those following the Path of the Preserver, so that they may not waste one of their selections on a spell of limited utility.

Key:
  • = recommended spell for selection when changing levels
  • $ = spellbook which may be purchased from Ibod in Caravan Way, or from Daaku at the elven caravan

FIRST LEVEL
  • enlarge (enhances physical damage in combat, cumulative with strength spell. VERY useful... go back and get it instead of a higher level spell if you don't start with it randomly) (NEW FOR V1.6 - available via fruit.)
  • magic missile (good damage at higher levels)
  • $ gaze reflection (good protection vs. umber hulks)
  • $ grease (amusing, but you'll never need it)

SECOND LEVEL
  • strength (lasts a VERY long time,cumulative with psi adrenaline control)
  • protection from paralysis (useful unless you've also got free action) NEW FOR V1.6 - now ESSENTIAL unless a druid, since free action items all removed from game.
  • detect invisibility (useful unless you've got a helm of detection)
  • $ mirror image (purchase, VERY useful spell for avoiding combat damage)
  • $ blur (adds +1 to saving throws vs magic)
  • $ glitterdust (gets rid of invisibility)

THIRD LEVEL
  • haste (double number of physical attacks, single-use scrolls and fruit available.)
  • dispel magic (essential unless you also have the clerical version available.)
  • blink (prevents direct-targeted spells after you have acted in combat.)
  • $ spirit armor (adds +3 to saving throws vs. magic)
  • $ slow

FOURTH LEVEL
  • minor spell turning (reflect level 1-3 spells back at attackers)
  • wall of fire (superb damage vs. monsters, great in combo w/ psi energy control)
  • ice storm (decent damage vs. monsters, will penetrate minor globes)
  • stoneskin (invulnerability to physical attack, but VERY short duration. skip it if you're an earth druid/cleric, or don't mind carrying acorns.)
  • spider strand (impede is a VERY useful effect.)
  • $ minor globe of invulnerability (prevents all first-third level spells, including dispel magic. poofs if ya move.)
  • $ fire shield (opponents take damage when hitting you in combat. quite useful if your ironskin wears off.)
  • $ otiluke's resilient sphere (prevents most damage to you, but also prevents you from casting spells. note that free action will allow you to cast spells out of this, but this is considered game manipulation. SOLs should NOT initiate this super-sphere version unless an opponent in combat does first.) NEW FOR V1.6: Spell removed from the game, because of rampant bug abuse.
  • $ psionic dampener

FIFTH LEVEL
  • hold monster (held critters seem to automatically fail their saving throws, or you can attack for 2x damage.)
  • cone of cold (good damage spell)
  • wall of force (moderately good for trapping opposition or making escapes, though the single use forcecage is probably a better option for this. Pick up th efirst level enlarge spell instead, if you haven't already.)
  • $ feeblemind (prevents spellcasting by opponents if save is failed, nice followup to "dancing" scroll.)
  • $ cloudkill (small amount of damage to those in the cloud.)
  • $ chaos

SIXTH LEVEL
  • death fog (damages those in cloud, very useful in PvP)
  • anti-magic shell (useful if you have a lot of hitpoints)
  • disintegrate (instant death if save is failed, scrolls are available at EC)
  • globe of invulnerability (prevents levels 1-4 spells, scrolls are available at EC)
  • flesh to stone (a death spell, if save is failed)
  • $ improved slow
  • $ tenser's transformation (double hit points, but lose control of your character)

SEVENTH LEVEL
  • prismatic spray (turns opponent to stone, with no save, unless they have psionic "energy control") NEW FOR V1.6: scrolls are no longer available)
  • spell turning (very good spell protection. also available on scrolls.)
  • $ delayed blast fireball (great damage, plus leaves wall of flame that can shut down combat)

USEFUL SINGLE-USE SCROLLS
  • $ meteor swarm (very painful for those without Energy Control, in PvP) NEW FOR V1.6: No longer for sale... can still be won in events.
  • $ spell turning
  • $ otto's irresistible dance (causes targets to dance, and fail ALL saving throws)
  • $ incendiary cloud (firestorm, opponents will be unable to cast, even if they have Energy Control up.)
  • $ forcecage (nice for making or preventing a hasty getaway)
