Puzzle Bobble [Bust-A-Move]

Review by: Mike

In America, we call it Bust-A-Move. Everywhere else, it's called Puzzle Bobble. I think Bust-A-Move sounds pretty lame, so I call it Puzzle Bobble. Plus in Japan, there is a Dance Simulator called Bust-A-Move. Anyways, another puzzle game you might say? Well, in fact Puzzle Bobble games and Puyo Puyo are the only puzzle games I really like. Puzzle Bobble is pretty simple, but unlike Puyo Puyo it doesn't have those extra things to really make you think. Basically, you are Bub & Bob (those dragons from the classic Bubble Bobble series) and you have to match three balls of the same color by shooting them up from the bottom of the screen. If you make a match, the bubbles will pop, and anything below it that is not connected to anything will also drop. It's simple, but again, it works.

 Graphics
Noting special. This game is four years old, so the graphics are a little dated, but it features colorful sprites. Bub and Bob are cool at the bottom how they work together to actually operate the contraption that shoots the bubbles. Not the best, but it definatly works for this game.

 Sound
The sound effects are annoying. Those beeps and boobs make you wanta disconnect the speakers, but you don't because the music is pretty cool. Although it is cutsy sounding, it sticks in your head. In fact, right now I'm thinking of the music in my head. Some people though, may really wanta get rid of the sound after they heard the little kid say something before the level. I think they're saying ready go, but my friend says he hears something else.

 Control
Simple, Simple, Simple. It uses a left and right joystick deal, and one button. Does it get any simpler?

 Challenge/Fun
This game is fun. Me and my friends goto either this one restaurant (we never eat food there, cause it sucks) or the nickel arcade to play it. The two player mode is fun at first, but the one player mode is my favorite. This game is pretty popular too. Whenever we see it at arcades there's somebody playing it. I really think that if Puyo Puyo was placed in arcades here in the US, people would play it and it would get popular.

Overall
The showdown. Which series is better? Puyo Puyo or Puzzle Bobble? I say Puyo Puyo. Some may not agree, but I think most would if they played both for a long time. One sad thing is that the Puzzle Bobble series has been getting worse and worse as the sequels come out. I've played 2 and 3 in arcades, but yet to play 4 (which is only in Japan right now). On the other hand, Puyo Puyo has been getting better with age. It's a close call, but Puzzle Bobble is an excellent game, and one of my all time favorites.

Score:    9
