Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter

               Chapter 15

Memories of Hester's past with the old
man came to her - memories which should
have been happy but were not.
        Meanwhile Pearl amused herself by
floating snails on bark, playing with foam
from the sea, throwing pebbles at birds, and
     dressing in seaweed.
She hit a bird with a pebble and felt sorry
for harming a creature as wild as herself.
When her mother called, Pearl came
covered with seaweed and wearing a green
     letter *A* on her chest.
Seeing the letter, Hester wondered if she
should share the secret with Pearl. After all
she could see the qualities of courage, will,
     pride, and self-respect emerging.
        As Hester considered, Pearl continually
asked what the scarlet letter meant and why
the minister always clutched at his heart.
In the end, she decided against revealing
the secrets even though Pearl persisted.
Pearl spends time floating snails,
playing with foam, throwing pebbles
at birds, and dressing in seaweed.
