Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter

               Chapter 16

Hester wanted to meet with Dimmes-
dale to tell him about Chillingworth’s
        evil nature.
She decided to confront him alone
and in an open place. When she learned
he’d be traveling through the forest,
she chose to talk with him there.
She departed with Pearl who thought
they were planning to rendezvous with
the Black Man. As they traversed the
trail, the sunlight danced in front of
them, and Pearl ran to it. When Hester
tried to touch it, the light vanished.
Pearl said it did not love her, and she
could catch it because she did not yet
have the mark on her bosom.
Later, they left the trail so they
could be alone while Hester told a
story. However, Pearl was told to play
        elsewhere when Hester realized Dimmes-
        dale was arriving.
The elusive sunlight grants the
path the pleasure of being graced
by its alluring presence.
