Chapter 17
When Dimmesdale realized Hester was
calling to him from the forest, he became
excited. They went into the forest, off
the path and away from anyone who passed
by, and proceeded to question each other
in general.
Dimmesdale told how he was stricken
with misery and despair, and perhaps, if
he was and atheist, he could have been
at peace.
Hester revealed Chillingworth was her hus-
band and he was the evil tormenting Dimmes-
dale. The minister wondered if he should
forgive Hester since she had kept the secret,
and did so rather quickly announcing the true
sinner was Chillingworth because he violated
another human heart. After all, what they had
done, they shared.
Hester suggested they leave the colony
to start anew. The suggestion seemingly
intrigued Dimmesdale.
