Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter

               Chapter 18

         Hester and Dimmesdale made the
decision to leave the colony. Since
Hester openly showed her sin, she was
able to ponder conditions from a
      different perspective. Therefore, the
      decision was easy for her.
Dimmesdale, on the other hand, had a
      more difficult time making the
      decision.
         Once decided, Dimmesdale
      questioned whether Pearl would
      accept and love him.
After the matter of leaving was
      settled, Hester removed the scarlet
letter and flung it towards the river.
During this time, Pearl was playing
in the forest -- getting close to animals,
eating berries and dressing in flowers.
When Hester to called her, she came
rather slowly because she saw the
      minister.
The discarded scarlet letter
lands in a bush, falling
short of the river.
