Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter

               Chapter 20

         Two reasons Hester and Dimmesdale
      decided to go to the Old World were
      for concealment and an easier life for
      the minister.
         They planned to leave in four days
      time on a ship from the Spanish Main;
      enough time for Dimmesdale to give
      his Election Sermon. By giving the
      speech, he felt he would have left no
      public duty unperformed.
         When Dimmesdale left Hester and
      Pearl in the forest, he was full of
      energy, and he thought of committing
      evil on his way home.
         In his home, he conversed with
      Chillingworth.  The physician realized
      Dimmesdale knew he was evil. In
      addition, the manner in which
      Chillingworth spoke, hinted he might
      know of the minister’s plan to leave the
      colony.
Hester and Dimmesdale decided
to leave on a ship from
the Spanish Main.
