Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter

               Chapter 4

Hester was in a state of nervous
excitement in the prison and her baby
was sick. The guard, being suspicious,
brought a physician to assist her.
The physician was the figure Hester
recognized on the outskirts of the
crowd. The person she also recognized
as her husband. He claimed his name
to be Roger Chillingworth, and he was
      a learned man.
When he tried to give the baby
medicine, Hester was concerned as to
      whether it was poison. Roger
explained he wouldn’t hurt the baby; it
hadn’t done anything wrong, but the
father had. Hester said she would never
      tell him the father’s name.
Roger requested of Hester to not
reveal his identity or their marriage
so he wouldn’t be shamed for being
      left by his wife.
Roger Chillingworth explains to
Hester the importance of his identity
remaining a secret.
