Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter


               Chapter 8
   
         Governor Bellingham, Wilson,
      Chillingworth, and Dimmesdale walked
      in the garden.
         Upon their entry into the mansion,
      they saw Pearl.  They asked her
      questions and seemed to joke with her. 
      Soon, Hester’s presence became known
      and they discussed Pearl.
         Bellingham wanted to put Pearl in
      the guardianship of someone more able
      to raise her properly.  Hester stated
      Pearl reminded her of the sin and
      taught her daily.  Dimmesdale agreed
      with Hester.  After his speech, Pearl
      showed affection by putting her face to
      his hand.  Chillingworth, then, voiced
      his opinion of being able to determine
      the father by analyzing Pearl.
         When Hester and Pearl left the
      mansion, Mistress Hibbins offered
      Hester to go to the forest; she declined
Pearl puts her head in the
hand of Dimmesdale.
