ARMOR TYPES

An elaboration of the existing armor types and addition of a few new types. Durability and cost info can be found here.

Padded Leather, AF 1
Made from animal hides.

Hardened Leather, AF 2
Animal hides which had been chemically treated to harden its texture.

Studded Leather, AF2
Animal hides sewn or fastened with metal studs or discs.

Scalemail, AF 2
Made from small and lightweight metal rings which interlock one another.
Though it is the same AF as Hardened Leather, the difference is its higher durability. (See Equipment Durability). GMs, take note that metal is susceptible to rust, magnetism and corrosion (metal eating spells or monsters) whereas leather is not. (Conversely, leather being organic, is prone to other effects – fungus etc). Arguably, another disadvantage is that it is not as stealthy for its wearer as hardened leather.

Ringmail, AF 3
Made from stronger rings of metal, usually in overlapping layers.

Chainmail, AF 4
Several layers enhance the armor factor. If used with pieces of metal (moulded to fit the body’s contours), may be called splint mail or band mail.

Plate, AF 5
Plate armor is actually worn with mail underneath. (See A Knight and His Armor, for detailed descriptions). To distinguish from full plate armor, this may be called plate mail, or field plate. Knights out on field missions will wear this.

Full Plate, AF 6
Knights wear this during jousts, tourneys, official functions and ceremonies. It is much too bulky and heavy for regular adventuring use. (-2 ATTACK & DEFENCE if Strength <16, -1 if Strength >=16; -1 EVASION).

SHIELDS & BLOCKING

I felt that the shield’s 1 in 6 chance of blocking a successful strike was not much of an incentive for characters to use them – they would much rather use a two-handed weapon. So I expanded the list of shields.

Large Shield 1 in 5 chances of blocking a melee hit. (Roll 1 or 2 on a d10)
Medium Shield 1 in 6
Small Shield "Buckler" 1 in 8. This is strapped to the non-weapon arm and has the advantage that the character can still hold a torch or dagger etc in his hand.
