Given Norton's currently has
a position as the number one selling anti-virus, unfortunately
viruses writes have taken to targeting it, in addition to
problems with the program itself. The following are a known
list of issues known to affect Norton's:
- Viruses will shut down/disable Norton's
Given Norton's popularity in the anti-virus market,
viruses writers are now creating viruses that will target
and disable Norton's. Although such a situation dose not
seem believable, after all, anti-viruses are there to
stop viruses invading, the truth is no program is perfect.
Hackers and virus writers target the programs being used
by the largest percentage of the population, and right
now Norton's IS that product.
- Norton's WILL NOT WORK with SSL encrypted email
Although the reason for this is unknown (AVG is the
only other product known to currently have this fault)
the end result is clear. While some email servers try
to make their encryption harder for hackers to break into,
Norton's ends up breaking this system. The only way to
resolve it? You have to manually disable the scanning
of emails. While this IS a fix, it may not be the best
approach, given that, although unlikely not impossible,
you may send emails out to others which are infected with
a viruses.
Known email servers affected by this issue include:
- Sympatico Email (@sympatico.ca)
- Earthlink (@earthlink.net)
- There are reports of machines with Norton's on getting
viruses
While this problem may be related to reason one, is
not the point of having an anti-virus to prevent viruses?
If Norton's permits viruses onto your system, you might
as well not have an anti-virus at all. And if you're thinking
'It will stop some viruses at least!', you're wrong. Once
an anti-virus becomes compromised by a viruses, it becomes
less and less able to perform it's function. Besides,
all it takes is one or two nasty bugs, and you loose everything.
Still not convinced? Check out user reviews at Castle
Cops, Amazon
or run a search for the complaints on this product. There
are so many issues with this program at the moment, it isn't
worth the cost, or the frustration to run it.
